The way I look at it, authors hurt themselves by limiting themselves to a single pathway to publication. Once your novel is ready to be sent out, why not submit it both to agents and to publishers directly? After all, you'll craft a query letter that could, with only a few tweaks, work for both audiences.
I'm in the last stages of rewriting for my novel, and I'm planning to send out queries to a number of agents but also to several publishing houses that accept agentless submissions. It certainly wouldn't hurt to try all your options.
