I love the idea of steampunk, but find the need to research steam-powered stuff to be off-putting. S/F is easier because if I write the characters got in a spaceship and took off, or they got in the transmolecular-wormhole generator and were transpoted to a new place, I don't really have to explain it. Everyone knows what I mean thanks to Star Trek, etc. But in steam punk, if I write they got in the klopler and the oversize engine-gears rumble to life ... well, you're gonna want an explanation aren't you? You're gonna want to know what it looks like and how it works. Jeepers - I can barely press the right buttons on the universal remote...
That's what scares me about steampunk. I like the clothes though. Maybe I'll get over the fear eventually...
