SciFi during pulp era had a similar theme: impending doom looms over a backwater tribe, and a White man comes in to save the day with his superior technology and skills, and wins the heart of the tribe's beautiful princess. Heck, pulp Westerns used to be (and still are) the same.

It's like what Raven said. I can't remember his name, but the first pulp fiction publisher wanted fiction to be accessible for everyone, so he used cheap paper made of pulp.

You may have noticed that Avater follows the tradition of pulp fiction.
