I agree. I consider myself a dark writer, nearly all my pieces are labelled as such, but I don't think I've written more than one or two horror pieces. Instead, I pick out the dark aspects of what already is and exaggerate them, or simply demonstrate them, in a story/piece of writing. This could mean undertones of oppression, dystopias, pointless death, loss of freedom, darker emotions/motives, morally grey (I refuse to call any character 'bad' ) characters triumphing... those are probably the most common for me. That and just a dark feeling to them. I think it's important to have an aspect of darkness to almost every piece - after all, that's real life, isn't it? If they don't, what will push the reader to act and change the bad things happening? That's always been my problem with purely light stories - on general, I don't think they portray messages as powerfully. Of course, this is complete opinion and there are many, many exceptions On a side note, I've got a folder in my port called 'lighter works' for ones that aren't dark. There's only three pieces in it Cheers, Rip ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** It's not denial. I'm just very selective about the reality I accept- Calvin and Hobbes |
