I'd considered a low-level of law enforcement; how organized it will be will probably depend on how big the village is...

The wild animals is something I hadn't thought about yet, but that's an excellent point. I might need to include some dangerous wild somethings that come down from the mountains in winter (example) both to add tension and include some training for fighting it off, possibly with a specialized weapon - or as you said, farming/building tool that could be purposed for fighting off the wild things.
