The application requirements and form for WYRM.
The WYRM group banner.

Welcome to the WYRM application process. If you came across this page by accident, we urge you to visit the main "WYRM group page where you can learn more about our writing and reviewing group.

For those of you who are here to read through the application process, hey there! It's good to see you. First thing we're going to have you do is review a selected piece from one of our members. Then we'll have you fill out the form at the bottom of this item. Your ability to follow directions will play a part in our selection process, but you will lose no points for asking questions along the way. You can do that in the "Talk to the WYRMs forum, or by emailing any member of WYRM. You'll find the list of the current WYRMs by going to "WYRM and scrolling down to the list of Group Members at the bottom of the item. Click on the envelope beside any of their handles to send your chosen WYRM an email. (Pro tip: don't choose to email WYRM ; it's notoriously bad at answering emails.)

[ Application Checklist ]

*Dragonheadb* A review of a piece listed below.
*Dragonheadr* A speculative fiction story or chapter of your own to link.
*Dragonhead* Eighteen years of life behind you.

[ Application Review ]

Read over the following items and choose one to give an in-depth review.

*Bullet* "The Weeper [ASR] by J.B. Ezar
    Young musician owes his overwhelming success to a possessed violin.

*Bullet* "The Seven Wonders of the Universe [13+] by Tobber
    The Seven Wonders of the Universe: The Definitive Intergalactic Travel Guide

*Bullet* "Invalid Item [] by A Guest Visitor

*Bullet* "Nothing [13+] by Una Ciudad de la Inglaterra
    Nothing Ch 1. Everyone demands Egret marry for an alliance to save the empire. She flees.

MAKE YOUR IN-DEPTH REVIEW PUBLIC. If you don't make your review public, we cannot consider your application. To make a review public, click the box beside "Make Public" beneath the review box of the item you've chosen to review.

We at WYRM don't expect everyone to review like we do within the group; we enjoy receiving all kinds of non-WYRM reviews when we're outside the group. But we wanted to be in this group so that we could give and receive in-depth reviews. They're how we best learn, whether we're giving or receiving them. An in-depth review can't happen without critical thinking, without considering the meat of a piece. It dives into whatever story elements feel most pertinent to you, the reader. An in-depth review is a roadmap of the reader's reaction to their journey through the story.

We'd love you to interpret the previous paragraph as best fits you, but If you want to learn more about what WYRM means by "in-depth," we have a couple of ways you can do that.

*Dragon2* Affiliated Reviews  : Most of the time, you won't see a lot of reviews here. WYRM does not require review affiliation, so members may choose to affiliate their reviews with other groups. Also, many of the items up for review in our private review forum are on restricted access, so even if a WYRM reviewer makes their review “public,” the review will stay between the writer and the reviewer. Note

*Dragon2* Sample reviews: The "Affiliated Reviews" link only shows reviews that are a month or less old, so have some links to WYRMy reviews under this dropnote.

Your review is what will make or break your application. We will absolutely read your writing, and we will try to get a general impression of what you're like based on your application and Writing.com portfolio, but your review is what we'll pore over the most. It should be your best effort, and your personality should be apparent within it.

Keep in mind that you can apply as many times as you want. There is a box to check in the form below to let us know that you'd like feedback on your review should your application be denied.

[ Application Form ]

The first field of this survey form asks that applicants be 18 years of age or older. This is because of the items potentially up for review and because of the nature of the group itself. We swap adult ideas and therefore it's best if all members are adults.

The second field of this survey form asks for a link to your public, in-depth review of an item listed above in this form. To create a link to your review, copy-paste the code you get after you send a review. If you miss that, then go to the "Reviews" tab in your portfolio and scroll down to your review. In the upper right-hand corner there'll be a number next to the binoculars icon. Copy-paste that number and use it in place of the hashtags in this code: {review:#######}

The third field of this survey form asks if you would like members of WYRM to critique your Application Review. If you check the box, you will only get such a critique should your application be denied. (If your application is accepted, you don't need our advice on writing a WYRM review; you already wrote your best sample of one.)

The critique you receive will come from the member whose item you reviewed, unless that member hands off the responsibility to another WYRM. It will incorporate the discussion WYRM members have had about your review during our voting process.

The fourth field of this survey form requests a link to one of your speculative fiction (fantasy, sci-fi, supernatural, horror, etc.) items. We ask for this so we can get a heads-up on what kind of items we'll be reviewing; it doesn't have to be something that you will definitely have up for review if your application is approved, but it should be a good sample of the kind of thing we can expect to be reviewing. It can be a story or a novel chapter. If you link an entire book item, we will only read the first chapter.

*Dragon2* If the piece is a static item, use this code to link it, with your item number in place of the hashtags: {item:#######}

*Dragon2* If your piece is the first entry in a book item, use this code to link it, with the book entry number in place of the hashtags: {entry:#######}

The members of WYRM thank you for the time and effort you have put into our application process. Give us a few days to go over your application review, your application form, and your portfolio. We will get back to you with our decision as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns or just need to vent, come by "Talk to the WYRMs or email someone on the list of members over at "WYRM. We would absolutely love to help you.
