Poetry By Numbers 2.0 - Part Two: 5’s and 6’s

Over ten years ago I created the original “Poetry By Numbers” article and so decided it was time to bring it back to share with some updated material within it. Enjoy!

Counting is important in poetry; from counting syllables and metrical feet, to counting lines and stanzas in order to follow certain forms. Today we will go over the vocabulary that accompanies some of these tasks, as well as a couple poetry forms for you to try.

Poetry By 5’s

Poetry by five’s, in stanza form, is called a quintet. There are several forms that are, or use, quintets. A few of note are: the limerick, tanka, cinquain, and the quintilla.

Ten years ago I shared the Cinquain. This time I'm sharing the Tableau form. This form is not a quintet but instead uses five in that in the poem each line has five syllables.

Tableau

BRIEF HISTORY

The poetess Emily Romano is the mother of this poetry child. She birthed it almost a dozen years ago.

MUST HAVES

--6 lines.

--Meter: Syllabic. Five syllables per line.

–“Tableau” should be in the title.

--Create a scene or picture with your poem.

COULD HAVES or What's The Poet's Choice In All This?

--Rhyme or not is up to you. Any rhyme scheme if you do choose to rhyme.

--Any subject matter.

Poetry By 6’s

When you talk about poetry by six’s in stanza form, it is a sestet. There are several forms that are, or use, sestets. A few of them are: the sestina, hir a thoddaid, and the clogyrnach.

Ten years ago I shared the Sestina. This time I'm sharing the Treinte-sei and Tri-fall forms. Both have six-line stanzas.

Treinte-sei

BRIEF HISTORY

The name of the form comes from the number of lines it takes to create the form. John Ciardi created this form.

MUST HAVES

---Six stanzas.

--Stanza length: 6 lines.

--Meter: Pentameter.

--Rhymed: ABABCC

--Repeating lines: Line two of the first stanza becomes line one of the second. Line three of the first stanza becomes line one of the third stanza. Line four of the first stanza becomes the first line of the fourth stanza. Line five of the first stanza becomes the first line of the fifth stanza. Line six of the first stanza becomes the first line of the last stanza.

COULD HAVES or What's The Poet's Choice In All This?

--Subject matter.

--Theme

Tri-fall

BRIEF HISTORY

The Tri-fall is the invention of Jan Turner.

MUST HAVES

--Three stanzas

--Stanza length: 6 lines.

--Rhymed: ABCABC

--Meter: 6, 3, 8, 6, 3, 8

--Using punctuation in this form is rare.

COULD HAVES or What's The Poet's Choice In All This?

--Theme

--Subject matter.

OF NOTE

Other forms that have six six-line stanzas: Stave of six and Tyburn.

Comment: a couple I tried to write today

She Came to Me One Night in a Dream

she came to me one night in dream
most beautiful woman ever
I saw

central mystery of my life
who was this women in dream
haunting

she came every night Eight Years
haunting my life and my night
dream time

I did not know what to do or say
to her as she stood by my side
Smiling

filling my heart with thoughts of love
wondering who or what she was
angel

truly live began that day I met
the women of my life and dream
lover

for eight years she was there at night
every night haunting my dreams
lover

then one day she said don’t worry
we would meet soon that night she came
to life

My Love My Life

my love my life
my bride my wife
my dream woman
my real woman

my lover for life
you became my wife
it was just fate
that awesome date

when you came to life
became my wife
that date Met fate
the hour was late

Thank you so much for sharing!
