Letter from the editor

It’s never too early to start thinking about any writing goals you may have for 2021. One way to set those goals is to pen an entry to the site’s contest Dear Me. It’s one of the most popular and yields many entries . What can you do to have a winning entry? Write an entertaining entry by adding humor.

One of the contest rules is to write a letter to your future self and to set realistic goals. How can this be done and be entertaining without reading like a scientific essay? It’s impossible for the entry to be full of funny quips like a stand-up comedian, but by adding a few key humorous elements, it can keep everyone entertained.

*Vignette1* Write a Snappy Title:
Using the title Dear Me 2021 isn’t unique or original, so why not take it up a notch and be creative. Step back and ponder how all your past goals have worked out. If it hasn’t gone well, you could use a popular song title. Maybe something like this one will grab the reader's attention: Oops, I Did It Again. Oh Dear! Keep in mind, the title is what people see first, so you have 40 characters to make it a good one.

*Vignette2* Brief Description:
This is a great spot to add a funny line about you and your goals. There are 90 characters available to advertise why your entry is entertaining.

*Vignette3* Catchy Introduction:
The first paragraph is by far the most important to setting up the whole letter. Try adding a metaphor or a simile to add a humorous element. Did you fulfil your previous goals, or was it bad like the year 2020?

*Vignette1* The Body of the Letter:
Write the reasons why you didn’t fulfill previous goals. Were you distracted -- with what exactly? Pick your moments to exaggerate the why. Something like this might work: I just couldn’t finish my NaNo goal because my cat constantly stared at the side of my head with laser eyes. When writing about your future goals, meditate on how you’re going to fulfil them in 2021, and if you can, add something funny about your personality when it comes to attaining the goals.

*Vignette2* Conclusion:
This is your opportunity to wrap the letter up and leave them with a laugh. Go back to your opening paragraph and tie it to this one. Leave the reader with something funny by writing a humorous last line. You are talking to yourself, so the possibilities are endless — like for NaNo 2021 you’re going to make sure the cat isn’t around, and if it is, you’re going to be the one shooting laser eyes. You can also end it with you scolding yourself to do better but just make sure it's fun to read!

Here is the link to the popular site contest. It's not open until January 1st 2021. Consider writing a fun entry, and make sure no animals are allowed to enter the room to distract you. This includes any caged animals. Rumor has it that the Hamster's laser eyes are the most deadly!

Ask & Answer

*Questiony* What are your writing goals for 2021, and are you planning to enter the Dear Me contest?

*Tower* Feedback:

Fivesixer : *Laugh* Your headlines remind me of a meme I saw a few years ago of a news report...the chyron said "Man killed to death."

*Rolling* That's a funny one! I saw another one recently: Sisters reunited in checkout line after 18 years at supermarket. *Laugh* Crazy stuff!

*Tower* Thanks for the comments from the newsfeed. The question asked: For those participating in NaNo or any writing projects, how is it going? Are you reaching your goal?

s : Going okay. Getting there. The 50k goal is easy; my actual goal (70+k) might be tougher.

Kåre Enga in Montana : Nope. I may as well review what I've already written. New writing? The election drama frazzled my nerves. Once my anxiety heightens it takes time for it to calm down. I wish I were elsewhere... like Portugal or India... but covid... which is soaring here. I'm sure there are many writers here who are not at a risk health-wise. They are young and in good health. And politics? Maybe White-Christian-Heterosexual-Abled with friends just like them! For the rest of us... it's been a traumatic 4 years and even then... covid. So no, NaNoWriMo will have to wait until my nerves calm. Once shattered it takes awhile. And here at WDC? I'm not alone.

Jay O'Toole : I'm doing well, even with the concerns, that Kåre mentioned, but I believe the Lord urged me to enter NaNoWriMo this year to focus me on writing rather than on politics. I'm trying to maintain 2000 words a day to hit 60,000 by the end of the month. My nerves were jangled a bit on Election night, too, especially with some suspicious activities, regarding clandestine postings in the middle of the night to mysteriously take away the duly-earned electoral votes from my candidate, but I kept right on writing since I remember well the 2000 Election Debacle.

LeAnna Shields : I am on track to finish 2 days early if I keep up my pace. I love my project and my MC is now hip deep into the murder mystery.

jolanh : Since I turned Silverbolt Romance hero and let him share the spotlight with his leading lady I am up around 23k.

Roari ∞ : Just getting started ... again *Rolling*
So I'm back to 693 words after the last half hour. If I set my daily word count goal at 2,466, I'll hit the 50k mark on time! But, I want to be done a little earlier, so I'm going for 2,975....

Anna Marie Carlson : I'm making progress; I believe I'm getting near my goal. We'll see what happens. I'm hanging in there. I just finished entering The Humorous Short Story Contest and am in hopes that it will get a chuckle out of somebody.
