Hi newbies! Are you wondering how to connect with folks here in the vastness of WDC? There are so many folks from all over the world who play here: some who are here daily or in a regular way, some who come and go when life or writing allows the time, and some who come, leave a while and return!
 "Who's Online?"
 A good way to see who is on is to look at their portfolio icon. Hover your mouse on it and it will often show when someone joined and if they are on or off line or even when they were last on. It can be helpful to know if you are thinking of connecting with a certain writer. You can also click on Writing.Com Tools and click "Who's online?" to see who is here in present moment.
"Who's Online"
When you click on the black, yellow, blue or purple suitcase of a writer you can learn about them and their work. You might find folks from your own country or write in your genre or maybe share similar readings! All Points of connection. 
 Reviewing
 Review someone! It is a potential way of getting known and connecting with writers, who may also do a return review. You can find others who write in the genres you prefer by using Browse by Genre or Browse by Type.
 Forums and Groups
If you check under Browse by Type you will find the categories of Forums and Groups where you can discover places to chat, enter contests, review, and groups with specific topics, writing genres, reviewing, blogging, fundraisers and activities. You may find kindred spirits or some cool items to participate in. Contests are great ways to get your flair out there! 
"Using Message Forums"
 The Newsfeed
On the sidebar you will see a link to Newsfeed, where you can check what's going on. General Newsfeed hosts anyone who wan ts to post. Personal Newsfeed will include all the folks who see your feed or who you follow.
Now to maximize that connection you will want to Fan someone! and Have them fan you so you can automatically see that feed.
To Favourite or Fan someone, you just check the little plus sign beside their name. Once for favourite and two times click for Fan! Here is a cool instructional item by Richard ~ Shenanigans INC.  .  Some of us like pictures to help figure things out. 
This allows you to see your fans newsfeed notes: items they may post, or sharings. WDC advertises activities and newsletters on both personal and general newsfeeds. There may even be a surprise media MB activity! Fun!
Why favourite or fan? You can click to fan items or people. I favourite groups I belong to, current contests I may be entering, or activities, forums just so I can find them quickly and easily. Some will show up on the Right side bar.
I fan or favourite friends, or writers I want to follow, or cnote shops, or items that I may want to refer to at some future time. You can delete or add favourite/fans anytime!

A great way to connect with what's happening in real time! 
 Notebook and Messenger
Everyone has a notebook. You can pop in and say hi, or wish a happy birthday etc.
On the sidebar there is a Messenger tab...you can see who is online and connect to share or ask a question. I find it a quick way to say hey to a friend! "Instant Message Console"
 Getting involved in some activity is a good way to connect until you find your niche!
