Unofficial Newsletters


Did you know that, in addition to the thirteen official Writing.com newsletters , there are also a handful of unofficial newsletters published by the members of the site? For years, Wordsmitty ✍️ has been publishing an unofficial blogging newsletter for years (you can read them here: "Blogging Bliss Newsletters Published" ). There have been a number of unofficial science fiction newsletters over the years that have sought to differentiate themselves from the more general "fantasy" official newsletter. I edited the Unofficial Erotica Newsletter for years (old issues can be found here: "Unofficial Erotica Newsletter Archive" ), and contributed to other unofficial newsletters including ones for screenwriting, as well as specific niches like superheroes, supernatural horror, etc.

Writing newsletters can be a great way to explore a topic, and make connections with other members of the community that share the same interests. It can be a really wonderful way to build your nonfiction writing skills. And Writing.com has a bunch of great tools for managing a newsletter distribution. Some best practices include:


1. Create a WDC group and easy sign-up mechanism (like a survey form) to manage your mailing list. Groups have the ability to send a Group Email that will instantly go to everyone who's joined the group; it's a great way to handle subscriptions and publishing.

2. Come up with a consistent template so that your readers get familiar with the layout and where to find things.

3. Publish on a regular schedule. Whether it's daily, weekly, month, quarterly, or whatever, make sure your readers know when to expect issues in their inbox.


Most importantly, make sure that there isn't another similar newsletter already out there! When we participate in a site like Writing.com, especially since most of us are content creators, it's easy to instinctively think, "I really wish there were X, I should create it!" But if there's already something similar available on the site, ask yourself if what's really needed is a new product, or if there's a way you can contribute and add value to something that's already out there. Is there already a science fiction newsletter on the site? Would finding a way to collaborate on that and build it through the efforts of multiple people be a better product for the WDC community than two separate endeavors that do basically the same thing?

Whether it's a solo project or a group effort, though, I want to encourage you to consider working on a newsletter if you have an interest in nonfiction or writing for particular audiences, especially if you have expertise to share. And while the official newsletters have a number of specific requirements (being a Moderator+ in order to contribute to them, only a fixed number of NLs and slots available, etc.), the requirements for unofficial newsletters can be whatever you want them to be.
