SOCIAL HOUR
You have probably stumbled upon the Writing.Com newsfeed already. If you haven't been on the site long, you might not have been that impressed with it at first glance. Despite this, I assure you that it is a major feature of this site. Sure, you are here to write, to have others read your items, probably to read other people's stuff, but you may not be aware that this is a huge community of writers. The newsfeed is a big part of that.
Is Two Better Than One?
First off, you should take note that there are actually TWO versions of newsfeed. In the left-side column of this screen you will see a newsfeed link. Once you are in newsfeed, there is a bar at the top that says Community Newsfeed and Personal Newsfeed. You can toggle back and forth between the two versions.
Why would you do that? I mean, one is as good as the other, isn't it? The answer is: it depends.
Community Newsfeed is where you will see all the newsfeed posts from everyone on the site. This is where ALL of the action is. You will have to choose to view it every time you go to newsfeed. My personal opinion is that it is worth the one extra click.
Personal Newsfeed is the default setting. This is where you will see the posts from people you have favorited or fanned. When you are new here, it may look like a ghost town because you haven't had a chance to build up your favorites yet. That is also why it may not have looked all that interesting at first. Until you do build up your favorites list, you will want to click on Community Newsfeed and see what everyone is up to. You may find yourself always going to the Community Newsfeed because then you will see posts from people you haven't "met" yet, including newer newbies.
A Few Of My Favorite Things
Favorites? Fans? What is this all about? Take a look at anyone's handle. Here's mine: GeminiGem of House Lannister . Do you see a "plus sign" at the very end of my handle? If you click on it, I will be put in your list of favorites. (It's okay, go ahead and do it if you want.) You will find your favorites list in the right-hand side of the screen. If you click on the plus sign twice you will become my fan. Hey, there are worse things you could be. 
Who you put in your favorites or who you fan is completely up to you. You decide on the criteria for this, and there are no right or wrong reasons. Just know this: your favorites list is private. If you fan someone, they are notified.
What Are You Talking About, Willis?
Head on over to the Community Newsfeed and take a look at what kinds of things people post. It really ranges in subject matter. You will see people posting the last item they have put in their port or the most up-to-date blog post they have finished. You will find reminders for contests and fundraisers. You will see people commenting on local and world events. There will be people who post about their day or something going on in their personal life. The point is, the newsfeed is there to communicate with other members.
Do note though, that any WdC member will be able to see your newsfeed post and may respond. If you feel the need to post about hot button or controversial subjects, be prepared. This is a very diverse site with people from all walks of life, all ethnic, racial, sexual, and gender identities, all socio-economic backgrounds, all political leanings, ETC. This will influence how they respond to your post.
Also remember if you are posting personal issues that again, any member of WdC could potentially see this. If you are okay with that, then go ahead and post.
How Do You Rate?
A final, but VERY IMPORTANT note about newsfeed. You can choose the rating of your individual post. Let's say you wanted to post about something that may not be appropriate for our younger members. It could be because of language or subject matter. Make sure you change the rating of the post.
To change the rating, look for the dropdown you will see once you open up a newsfeed post at the bottom, under the text box. Here's a fair warning, you may get contacted by one of the site moderators if you don't rate your post appropriately. See WritingML Help for content rating system for guidance.
You can answer other members' posts along with starting posts of your own. The biggest thing to remember when posting on our newsfeed is to always respect other members. With mutual respect and friendly interactions, friendships are forged. This is how to be social on WdC. Hope to see you there! |

I do my initial search for items to feature by genre. If you are not choosing the THREE genres your writing can fall into when you are in editing mode of that item, you may be missing out! It is never too late to update all the items in your port. Genre to avoid: OTHER. |

I've been "newbied" for the past 8 months (if I can math?) and it does get old (the word has negative connotations for me, doesn't it for everyone?) I was overwhelmed at the vast resources, tools, and "WdC How-To" links and was nearly scared away. So I began hanging out on the Community Newsfeed, commented on posts that moved me, clicked on items that I found interesting. I learned so much from what others posted there that I was inspired to investigate the tools as I went, and resources available in bites when I needed them. If you're a newbie feeling overwhelmed, this approach might help a little?

Maybe the problem is that there is actually too much to do on WdC. It can seem a bit overwhelming and that is completely understandable! Just try one thing, see how you like it, then move onto other things.
