 Welcome to the Noticing Newbies Newsletter!
Our goal is to showcase some of our newest Writing.Com Authors and their items. From poetry and stories to creative polls and interactives, we'll bring you a wide variety of items to enjoy. We will also feature "how to" advice and items that will help to jump start the creation process on Writing.com
We hope all members of the site will take the time to read, rate, review and welcome our new authors. By introducing ourselves, reviewing items and reaching out, we will not only make them feel at home within our community, we just might make new friends!

Beginnings
Life is full of beginnings. Beginning school, starting work, learning a sport, becoming an adult, etc.
Writing has as many beginnings as the number of items we write. Every poem, story, article or journal entry needs a start.
A story can be won or lost in the opening sentence or paragraph. You either hook your reader to keep on reading, or you lose them to someone else's port. The reasons are varied and may be as simple as they're looking for a different genre to read. That's not in your control. What is in your control is the quality of writing - a spell check has been performed, it's formatted and easy to read on screen, and it has that all-important interest-grabber in the opening.
Choosing to join Writing.com (WDC) is another beginning, and whether you're looking for a fresh read or to showcase your writing, it is one beginning you will not regret. It can be scary, wandering into a new site and trying to figure out where to start.
Here are some great ways to begin your journey at WDC.
 Add an item to your portfolio. No one can read you if there's nothing in your port to read.
Complete your bio block (under your "My Account" page). This welcomes people into your port and gives you an opportunity to tell a little about yourself, your goals or just to say "hi" and "thank you for visiting".
Go and read some items, not fogetting to review, or at least leave a comment or two. It's a great way to learn and hone your own craft.
Explore the site. Not sure how something works or what it does? Take the time to read supplied information, follow links given, or use the Power Search to look for supporting documentation. Many members have written helpful items to help members with certain features of WDC.

My main goal is to get my sci-fi novel finished XD

Go, go, go! Have fun with the writing and best wishes for the project. 
I don't usually make a New Year's resolution, but this year I did.
I have resolved to procrastinate less (especially when it comes to writing) and to try extra hard to get that first-draft of my novel finished for that contest that ends Feb. 3 (and I just finished chapter eight. This'll take a bit).
