He's in love with HER???

Your character is sitting in a bar, surveying the scene. His eyes move across the room until one woman stops them. He watches her, mesmerized by her beauty and grace. He has to meet her. He moves through the crowd and slides onto the bar stool next to her, his interest peaked. They talk and the attraction grows stronger. He says something funny and she turns to him and letting loose a laugh that could shatter glass.

What your hero finds attractive is as much a part of his personality as his needs, wants, and drives. When creating your characters, you need to take into account the things they are looking for in a partner. Beauty is nice, but remember that most people aren't model beautiful.

Everyone has imperfections, and using that in your romance will make it more realistic to your reader than having everyone "perfect". There are some things you can add to a character to make them more "real" to the reader that will also add tension to your story.

Need an example? Think about Janice, Chandler's ex-girlfriend on the television show Friends. Honestly, you'd have to be in love with her to be around her all the time, wouldn't you? Her character is an extreme example of this, but she should give you some ideas.

Physical attraction is definitely part of a human's desire to meet a member of the opposite sex. Seeing someone you find attractive can raise your desire level, making you more inclined to take the risk to go over and say hello. But remember, no one is perfect, not even in a romance story.

Writing real characters, ones your readers will remember long after they finish your story, takes remembering that everyone is unique and beautiful to someone. Do that and your readers will be clamoring for your next tale.

Thank you for taking the time to read. Happy Writing!

Good point about the illness choice. I would hate to pick something that I first, don't know about and then get the information wrong. I'm all into the health thing, but thanks to your points of reference I'll make sure everything is correct before I publish it. Thanks again.

One other suggestion: try to avoid the "disease of the month." One summer, I read 5 books by various authors with characters with the same type of cancer. Worse, only one had done the research and got it "right."[if cancer can ever be right!]

Very good advice. I can't count the number of times I've read about the same illness in romance stories, or any other writing for that matter. It can be very tiring indeed!
