Awarding Winners

So the contest is over and you've chosen your winners. Now what?

Notifying Winners:

*Bullet* Post a message in your forum announcing the winners. A message will let entrants know that winners have been chosen.

*Bullet* Email the winners. I find it's a good idea to include a link to the entrant's entry and to the contest. Members often enter a few contests at once, so being specific can help them know which entry won which contest.

*Bullet* Some contest hosts create a group containing all entrants, as an easy way to email everyone. You may want to let entrants know they'll be added to a group upon entering.

*Bullet* Send a cNote as a thank you or to announce winners have been notified. cNotes are great ways to send a greeting, and some cNote collections allow the note to be sent to a group of members.

I recently created a collection of cNotes for just this purpose:
 Winners! cNote Collection  [E]
To notify winners and thank participants, plus general Congratulations
by spidey

*Bullet* Another option is to create a static item listing previous winners of your contest. This can do a number of things:

*Note1* Advertisement! Members who find this item will learn about your contest!
*Note1* Prospective participants can get an idea of what type of writing has won in the past, so they can understand the quality of work expected of them.
*Note1* Entrants will appreciate exposure for their work!

No matter how you notify winners, it's always a good idea to send a review of each entry and to thank participants. Without them, you couldn't host a contest! *Smile*

Always keep on writing!

Ask & Answer

My last newsletter spoke about reviewing Contests & Activities, and I'd like to share some of the feedback I received. *Smile*

Great post, my friend. I've been reviewing contests, auctions and forums for some time--your reasons are right on. *Thumbsup* ~ JACE - House Targaryen

Thanks much! *Bigsmile*

I have reviewed contests, usually because something wasn't clear and so I want to provide helpful feedback. Other times it's because I really liked something and want to tell them that. I know I'm grateful when people review my contests/activities.

Forum reviewing is different, for all the points you made about what to look for. You look for rule clarity, format of the content, fairness of prizes, etc. Most static items are stories, poems, etc. that require reviewers to analyze word choice, plot, characters, flow, etc. The two types of reviews of very different.

Thank you for pointing out aspects to look for when reviewing contests. I think I'll create a contest review format based on your suggestions. *Bigsmile*

Thanks for the feedback, and you have some excellent points here! I hope you create that review forum, and please let me know when you do! *Smile*

Question to think about: How do you notify winners of your contests? As a participant, how would you prefer to be notified?
