About This Newsletter

"I had thought — I had been told — that a 'funny' thing is a thing of a goodness. It isn't. Not ever is it funny to the person it happens to. Like that sheriff without his pants. The goodness is in the laughing itself. I grok it is a bravery... and a sharing... against pain and sorrow and defeat."
- Valentine Michael Smith
(Robert Heinlein,
Stranger in a Strange Land)

Fall Together Now!

By the time you read this, it'll be fall. This year, it happened at 5:18 pm Eastern Daylight Saving Time, which of course is the only time zone that matters.

As comedians, we all know, or should know, that Fall is the funniest season. That's because falling is funny. Except, of course, when it happens to me - then it's tragic.

So at the moment of equinox, noted above, the sun (from the point of view of the only hemisphere that matters) falls below the equator. Was that why they call it "Fall?" Or do leaves have something to do with that? And why do they call it autumn, anyway?

Many questions, and we, as comedy writers, have two choices: We can go to a reliable source such as Wikipedia and research it, or, in the grand tradition of comedy writers, we can Make Stuff Up.

The trick to MSU is not to lie convincingly. We'll leave that to the Republicans in the health care debate. No, the trick is to come up with something so outrageously out there that no one will believe it - but they will laugh.

For example, you could say that Fall was so named when Thor , the ancient Norse god who, one autumn equinox, tripped over his mead horn and fell right out of Asgard, landing in Midgard and causing an earthquake that ripped the trees from the land, scattering their leaves. Thus began Fall.

But that doesn't make sense. I mean, why would Thor's mead horn be on the floor and not in his hand?

Anyway, take some time this Fall to Make Stuff Up. You might just make someone laugh. Or, you might fall flat on your face.

Ask & Answer

Last time, I wrote about my experience as a wine snob.

ԜԜ On The Road Again! : Good Newsletter, Rob, about finding the humor in our own weaknesses. I have to join you on the snob wagon, because I am a snob also, in the wine, beer and scotch area. Oh, I must mention that I am a cigar snob, too! Yes, Web~Witch does enjoy an occasional, fine cigar. *Shock*

         Weaknesses? Waltz has no weaknesses!

Nwriter : I really enjoyed your description of a wine snob. Am i glad I subscribed for this newsletter. Everyone needs a good laugh! Besides, it's not easy to be funny without falling flat on your face!

Waltz is never funny when he's falling flat on his face. *Pthb*
