Supporting Your Community

The new year has arrived and it's typically the season for making resolutions and commitments. We all talk the talk about losing weight, getting organized and learning a new language. Okay, maybe the last one is just me, but you get the idea. This newsletter is about one more resolution. The commitment of community. In relative terms, Writing.com is not a huge site, but we're big on heart. The unique part of this community is the freewill and generosity of its members. Not only can you support the site by purchasing memberships, you can support the community by giving time.

Instead of spending three hours on a social media site looking for the perfect ecard that expresses your razor-sharp wit, try sending a single in-depth review. Instead of spending hours every week watching reality tv, become a regular entrant in a contest you like. And hey, if you read a newsletter that inspires you, let the editor know. The important point is that participating in your community is what makes it special and the activity is what attracts new members. New members means more visits to your portfolio. By all means, plug your work on social media, and link your friends back into our community. Link your portfolio in your About section.

Start a blog in your portfolio and visit other member blogs. You'll get to know others from the community and it will give you a new perspective on their writing. Blog about what you're reading and your opinion of the books. Or ask for suggested reading in your genre. Comment and let people know you're reading and they have an audience, or a sympathetic ear. Being an author can be lonely. Some of us can't share our writing or feelings about writing with our family or friends.

This is the place were fun and support is king. So think about it, try spending some free time outside your portfolio and help others in our community. You'll be glad you did. Write on!

Ask & Answer

This month's question: What suggestions do you have to keep our community active?

Last month's question: What are your tips for less holiday stress?

Quick-Quill advises: Stress is when you accept more than what you can handle. Learn to say NO! It's hard and if that isn't possible delegate. These are all personal situations you have to deal with. If not you are stuck with STRESS. Don't do it! practice saying "No thank you, I already have commitments." and "Please do this as it is a perfect job for you." You will find micromanaging leads to stress. If it isn't perfect, neither are we so we are comfortable. I live with a perfectionist. Love that man but it isn't easy. I love to entertain, I hire a caterer or we serve soup in fancy china with small sandwiches, easy appetizers and cookies cake for our guests. It is the fellowship not to food that we enjoy.

Steve adding writing to ntbk. says: Less holiday stress? Focus on what is important. Family, household peace and unity, friends who are positive influences in your life. When you focus on this you are not thinking about the minutia that can lead to more stress. KISS it in other words. Copenator out!

sylvia responds: Even good things can be stressful. combine that with an unrealistic goal of making everything perfect for the Holidays and you have stress with a capital S. So the real clue to cutting down on your stress is to let yourself be human. Everything doesn't have to be perfect. Still want to bake cookies? Ok, but only bake one or two kinds that you really like to make and then either ask others to bake too or buy some from a bakery. Same goes for every other chore. If you hate it don't do it. Buy it, pay someone else to do it or just leave it out all together. Have fun enjoy the people you are with and do something nice for someone everyday .
