Follow the Rules!

What would life be without rules? A confusing mess of chaos! The same goes for contests & activities! Whether participating or hosting, rules are very important to a contest or activity. Some things to consider:

*Idea* Rating - For a host, choose rating limits that match your comfort level when reading. Participants, pay attention to rating limit rules! (And be sure to rate the activity or contest correctly, too. Any words displayed in the item, whether a message post, item body or entry's title/intro must adhere to the contest or activity's rating. For instance, a contest itself can be rated E and accept 13+ items, as long as the title/intro which shows in a message post meets the contest rating.)

*Idea* Word Count - Give some thought to how much time you'll have to read and judge entries and choose a word count which suits your time availability! Participants, if a contest requires a word count to be included, don't forget it! You can find the Word Count tool under your "Item Tools" in the upper right corner of your item!

*Idea* Bitem links - You may want to clarify if an entry needs to be an individual item (most often linked with the "bitem" type of link) or if it can be entered directly into a message forum. Allowing forum entries can help those with portfolios which are full, but I think it's easier to read and review an individual item. *Wink*

*Idea* Deadline - Be sure to be specific when it comes to your deadline. Using WDC time can be helpful so everyone knows what time zone is being used, and don't forget AM or PM!

*Idea* Multiple Submissions - Will you allow multiple submissions from each participant? Something to think about!

There are lots of rules to think about when hosting a contest or activity! I'd suggest taking a look at other contests on the site to get an idea on which you'll want to include! I also suggest sticking to your rules. State clearly that failure to adhere to the rules may result in disqualification, and stick to what you say! Once you let one person slide by, others may expect the same treatment. It's up to you, the host, of course, but be warned!

And to participants of contests and activities, I cannot stress enough: *Exclaim*Read the rules*Exclaim* Re-read the rules, and just before you submit, read them again! *Laugh* Seriously, it's better than getting disqualified when you've worked really hard on your entry!

Always, keep on writing!

Ask & Answer

Ask & Answer

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (May 14, 2014)), discussed spicing things up for Being Social!

My experiences with other websites is mostly limited to FB and G+. Both are sites that people rave about and complain about in equal measures. When I'm active and posting new things, I get so much out of these sites that I can't stand to be away. If I don't post for some time, I start to wonder what I saw in it. You're absolutely, 100% correct - you get out of a site what you put in to it. The more active you are, the more rewarding the site is. And WDC is just the same. These sites all have potential - you have to unlock it.

I totally agree! *Smile*
