The purpose of this newsletter is to share my thoughts, ideas, and experience with anything and everything relating to contests and activities. Information from me to you on entering and running activities here on Writing.Com.

What's the Deadline?

Every contest or activity you look at will have a deadline posted somewhere. These are created to keep structure and allow for members to periodically change what they're doing through new prompts or possibly even to shut down a contest for a while.

Why are deadlines important? They're part of life and if you can't stick to them, you may find yourself out of luck with a job or homework assignment. Deadlines keep everything on a schedule and allow for people to have a solid goal to work toward. It can help them focus on one thing and stick to it.

Deadlines aren't without issues, though. It can be difficult to manage them if you run a number of contests or activities or if you plan to enter a large number at one time.


A few tips to help you keep track of deadlines and follow them:

*Starr* Use a calendar and mark in the date and time when a given contest ends.

*Staro* Set up a goal time to have stories written by, so you can avoid cutting it close.

*Star* Don't schedule things with deadlines close together or else you'll rush them.

*Starg* Always put the deadline at the top of your document when writing, then you know how long you have to write and edit.

*Starb* Make sure that deadlines are strict with contests and activities. A constantly changing deadline can make members apprehensive about entering.

*Starv* Follow the deadline and be sure your entry falls within it. Don't post too early or too late and make the owner have to disqualify your work.


Remember that deadlines are there for a reason and help owners and entrants keep to a schedule. If you respect them and keep track, you'll do just fine.

My question for you this time: Do you ever have issues with doing too many things with similar deadlines? How do you handle it?

Somtymes replied: For newbies who are nevous about entering contests - don't be! This community is all about feedback. Contests are a way to test yourself and get additional feedback. If you win, you feel great - if you lose, that's an opportunity to ask why and read the winning entries to found out how to better your writing. You won't be criticized for trying. Also, contest prompts are a great way to break out and try something new - use them as inspiration to write, and the rest will come naturally.
