The Ozark Romance Authors Writing Conference
This past weekend I attended the annual writing conference of the Ozark Romance Authors. I recently joined the group. and except for Writing.Com, it's the only writing group I've ever joined. I attended the conference in hopes of finding market for romance and erotica short stories. This group has a rather large number of published authors and a few editors of small to medium publishing companies as members several of whom I made the acquaintance while at the conference.
I've decided to actively pursue publication and felt some personal accountability was needed. While I've been able to meet suspenses and deadlines on my own, organizing my a submission for publication has eluded me. I expect the personal touch will help me overcome that hurdle.
A couple observations: First, I discovered (not unsurprisingly) that these genres are dominated by women. Of the 78 registered attendees and the 20 authors manning tables around the room, only six men were present (none of whom manned an author's table). Speaking with the editors present, they had few, if any, male authors signed. Still, all was not lost. Each editor and agent to a person stated they wanted well-written works, authorial sex notwithstanding.
Second, I was impressed with the out-going nature of the writers there, whether they were published or aspiring authors. There was genuine interest in what kind of writing I did, what my goals were, was I involved in a local group where I lived, and the like. I figured a group like this was just the kick I needed to dust off those stories and get them seen.
Finally, here are several points cited by one presenter. Indeed, these points can apply to any genre.
 Set the stage. Introduce your characters. Create your background. But ... don't overwhelm your reader with useless information.
Anything relevant to the storyline should be repeated at least three times. Use dialogue, action sequences .and background information to introduce these items. Mixing these methods heightens interest, and the repetition drives the importance home.
Be choosy with details. Identify the things your reader needs to know and discard the rest.
Reader's don't have ESP. They won't know why something is happening unless the're told. You, as the author, know your character's mind. Don't leave readers in the dark.
Make sure there's a payout. If you introduce a particular event or item early on, be sure to tie it in by the end of the story. It doesn't have to be a major event, just something that moves your story along.
Writer's conferences are a great way to network, not only with fellow published and aspiring authors, but also with agents and editors. Check your local library for possible writer's groups, and search for conferences on Google. This might just be the kick you need. Write on!
