Easter Poetry Forms

This time of year many people celebrate Easter. I found a couple of poetry forms that remind me of that celebration.

Blessed Cross

The Blessed Cross is a more modern poetry form. It is the brain child of Dorian Petersen Potter, and the form was born in 2009.

MUST HAVES

--Center aligned

--Rhyme: AABB CCDD EEFF GGHH AEGAEG (the final stanza uses lines repeated from stanzas 1, 3, 4—see below for details on that repetition)

--Stanzas: 5. Four 4-line stanzas first, and then one 6-line stanza. This final stanza is created by repeating lines in stanzas 1, 3, and 4:

Line 1 repeated
Line 9 repeated
Line 13 repeated
Line 2 repeated
Line 10 repeated
Line 14 repeated

--Line count: 22

--Meter: Syllabic. Stanzas 1, 3, 4, and 5 can be either six (6) or eight (8) syllables. Whichever you choose, you must be consistent throughout. Stanza 2 is 12 syllables.

--Topic: Doesn’t need to be religious, as long as it is inspirational or spiritual.

COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

--Meter of stanzas 1, 3, 4, and 5: six (6) or eight (8)—whichever you choose be consistent throughout the poem.

Cross of Salvation

This poem was created the same year as the one above, but this one’s creator is Christina R Jussaume.

MUST HAVES

--Number of stanzas: 4. Two eight-line stanzas, a four-line stanza and a three-line stanza in this order: 8, 4, 8, 3.

--Line count: 23.

--Meter: Syllabic. Syllable count is in the following order: 4, 12, 6, 4.

--Topic is same as above: spiritual.

--Center alignment is required.

COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

--Rhyme or not, it’s up to you.
