Letter from the editor

Holidays bring out the best in all of us, and especially here on Writing.Com. With the start of a new year many contest and activities have closed and many others will be opened. The one thing that members can count on is that the spirit of giving never ends here. There are so many contest and activities going on that demonstrate that spirit. Many have intentions to help authors improve, bestow gifts, sponsor various groups, entertain us, or expand our writing or imaginations.

Whatever the case, it’s always a shame to see a wonderful contest or activity go unnoticed. Creating an item and then just sitting around waiting for entries doesn’t work to well. A host has to get the word out.

Writing.Com offers so many ways to promote your item. "Activities @ Writing.Com and "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com are places a host would definitely want to consider posting their items. Be sure to read the rules on each page and check back often because your item could quickly drop off the list when other items are posted.

Using "The Writing.Com BidClick System is an excellent way to promote your items. Your items will gain instant exposure as will your portfolio. You will also reach more members by using the bidclick system simply because your items will be advertised right in front of them.

Some members advertise their items in Scroll although this method generally does not gain much exposure. While Writing.Com rules for Scroll does allow posting items the rules also state in moderation only! All members can view Scroll but only upgraded members and higher can post. If you chose to plug your item in scroll, be considerate of other members. Constantly plugging your items is against the rules and disrespectful to the members who are using Scroll.

Preferred authors and higher sometimes use their billboards to promote items. Using your signature block is also a great tool. Signatures show up in emails, forum posts and your journal entries.

There are many ways to promote your contests and activities. You may even find your items advertised by those special members that we all call Angels. They might be anonymous or not, or maybe someone gave you a public review which of course is great advertisement. Promoting your items is easy, it just takes a little bit of time and does not require spamming. And, if all else fails you could visit "Newsletter Area and submit your items to the newsletters for consideration. *Wink*
