When the phone rings at midnight -

HEARTBREAKER

When the phone rings at midnight
it's never "good news" you hear,
the sound of pain in the voice
of someone that you hold dear.

"Mom..." almost a whisper,
then the words start to flow -
and before they say anything
somehow - you just know.

Across the miles comes a cry
that tears at your heart,
connected by love you shared
from the very start...

For when band-aids are needed
they're never too old or wise
to reach out to someone who
will help them begin to realize

That life is not always fair
and a tragedy can strike.
It's up to you to comfort,
to try and make things right.

Whatever the time, the call
wakes you out of sound sleep,
and you put on your "worry cap"
as their trouble you greet.

The impulse is there to say
"Come home where you belong"
but as you continue to listen,
you might just be wrong.

Will they gain strength to go on?
Will things turn out all right?
Just be ready to listen to them,
when the call comes at midnight.

Sometimes they just need
to have someone there to call,
the heartbreaker is when
they don't call you at all.

Hands slipping away as
you hang up the phone...
the connection is lost,
Once more they're alone.
