ROSES IN WINTER

The morning was sunny and bright
and I had no sense of foreboding,
yet somehow as the day went on
my cheerful nature started eroding.

I couldn't place the cause of despair
that overwhelmed my whole being;
whatever was causing the tension
was something I wasn't yet seeing.

About six o'clock in the evening
a loud knock sounded at my door.
standing there was a policeman,
here to do his hardest chore..

They had found my dear sister,
an apparent suicide, he said.
It was hard for me to imagine
that she could really be dead.

We had planned our Thanksgiving,
family was soon going to come;
now we had no thanks left to give
and I had no place that I could run.

Roses in winter graced the casket
some red, some yellow, some white,
resting in a bed of the darkest green
they made such a beautiful sight...

And, oh God, how I miss her!
