Be Swept away in a high sea's adventure of love, lies, and secret identies.
Her breaths came out in short pants as he kissed her neck softly. He bent and placed a feather light kiss at her pulse point, which was now racing erratically. Her hands roamed over broad shoulders corded with muscle. Something was building in the pit of her stomach, and she wasn’t sure what it was. His large calloused hand ran up the outside of her thigh and she shivered with delight. The man continued to shower kisses upon her. He kissed the gentle slope of her stomach, teasing the soft flesh with the tip of his tongue. What was the feeling she was having? She was being lifted higher and higher until she was certain she could touch the stars.

The early morning sun filtered through the lace curtains and into the face of the sleeping woman. She stretched lazily and sat up not wanting to leave the warmth of her bed. Unwinding her hair from it’s heavy braid she padded over to the dressing table. She stared at her reflection and pondered the meaning of the dream she had. It was the third time in three nights she had had such a dream. She didn’t know what it meant, but it couldn’t have all been bad. Her green eyes sparkled with mischief. Her eyes were heavily fringed with black lashes and often the jealous rage of the women in London who had to glue theirs on. Her eyebrows arched delicately on her oval face giving her almost an exotic look. She had high cheek bones with a natural blush and a small nose. Ladies in London were jealous of her beauty, but she didn’t consider herself beautiful.

Alexus Daniela Winsmore stared in the mirror as the slightly pale Mary, her maid, pulled the brush through thick mahogany locks. The maid fashioned her hair in a neat coiffure and secured it tightly. Satisfied with her appearance Alexus walked to the wardrobe and pulled out a bright yellow silk and taffeta gown. Holding it up in front of her, she peered into the floor length mirror and turned from side to side.

“What do you think about this one Mary?” She asked turning this way and that.

“Tis’a lovely one, miss. It makes your eyes sparkle. Don’t forget about your luncheon with Mister Reynolds,” she said softly while making the bed.

“Drat. I forgot about that. Tell me again why I have to go?”

“Because you father wants you to marry the mister.”

Happy birthday to me, she thought sourly.

“He is nearly sixty years old, and old enough to be my grandfather,” she said. He certainly wasn’t the man she had hoped to spend the rest of her life with.

Michael DeVoe was the man of her dreams for as long as she could remember. She and Michael had spent most of their childhood days playing and laughing together. Michael, six years her senior, had blond hair and eyes so blue they would make the sky jealous. Alexus remembered the day of her thirteenth birthday party, she had expressed her love to Michael, but he had broken her heart. Instead he had knelt down in front of her and took her into his arms with a tight embrace.

“Lexi love, it just wouldn’t be right. You’re the sister I never had,” he said kissing her cheek.

“But I love you,” she had sobbed.

“One day you’ll find a man deserving of your love, I don’t deserve it."

“You are the only man I’ll ever love. Please, can’t you love me in return?” She begged.

Michael stood and stepped back. “I’m sorry Lexi love, but I just cannot,” he said. His heart was breaking as the tears streamed down her pretty little face.

“I hate you Michael DeVoe, and I never want to see you again,” she screamed as she ran up the stairs to her room.

Alexus remembered that day like it was yesterday. She remembered Mary sitting and crying with her. Alexus had no way of knowing that would be the last time she would ever see Michael again. Michael and his family’s ship had been attacked by Black Beard, and all had been killed. Regret filled her heart, regret of saying such mean things him, and regret that she would never get the chance to apologize to him for what she said.

“Tis thinkn’ about master DeVoe again, aren’t ya?” Mary said interrupting her thoughts.

“How did you know,” Alexus said turning to her.

“I can tell when you get all quiet and such that you are thinking about him,” Mary said coming to stand beside Alexus.

“I’m just afraid I’ll forget about him."

“You’ll never forget him, but you’ve to understand he ain’t coming back,” Mary said kindly.

“I know. It’s just nice to think about him every now and them. Besides I have to think about something good if I am to marry a man old enough to be my grandfather,” Alexus said screwing her face into an awkward position.

Mary giggled and both girls erupted into a riotous laughter. Finally getting their giggles under control Alexus finished her toilette and looked into the mirror. She approved of her image and walked out into the hall way. She smiled lovingly down at her father as he met her at the base of the winding stairway.

“You look so much like your mother, and your gown makes those beautiful eyes of yours just shine.” he said.

“Thank you father,” she said taking the aging man into her arms.

“Are you ready to go to lunch?”

“Father must I ?” She asked pouting.

“We’ve been over this my dear. Mister Reynolds is a suitable husband for you." He didn’t really want to see his daughter marry the old man, but Chester Reynolds had agreed to pay off all his debts in exchange for his daughter’s hand in marriage. He hadn’t told Alexus that they were completely penniless or how they had come to be that way.

“I know father, but I don’t love him,” she sighed wistfully.

“You need to get that foolish notion of love out of your head, girl,” he said tugging on his gray beard.

Alexus stared at her father and wondered for a moment why he really wanted her to marry the old man. Henry Winsmore’s face was leathery with age and his once bright blue eyes had lost their luster and were sad. He had a gray beard that dominated his face. Even though Alexus was tall for a woman her father was taller by a few inches.

“What’s in that head of yours girl?” His bushy eyebrows arched.

“Nothing, father,” she said placing her hand in the bend of his arm.

“Well then, shall we go?”

“If we must,” Alexus mumbled.

Alexus held her dainty lace handkerchief to her nose. The streets of London were so vile she wondered why she and her father had remained after her mother’s death. She looked at her father as he stared out the window. She sensed there was something he wasn’t telling her. There had never been secrets between she and her father.

“Father is everything all right?”

“Hmm... yes my dear everything is fine,” he said looking at his lovely daughter. She had grown up to be as beautiful as her mother. She had her mothers long dark hair. Her eyes were fringed with thick sooty lashes that protected a pair of bright green eyes. Until Henry had met Alexus’ mother he had never seen a shade of green more lovely. The color reminded him of the most precious rare jade stones, and when Alexus’ temper flared her eyes seemed to darken to a dangerous shade of dark green.

“You just seem so, distant,” she said placing a hand on her father’s much larger one.

“Really, my dear, I’m fine,” he said patting her gloved hand.

Alexus sat through the boring lunch while only half listening, to the rather robust Chester Reynolds, talk non stop about his fortunes and riches. All the while he craned his ham like neck to try and catch a peek of her bosom. Alexus snapped open her fan and fluttered her face while covering her chest. Chester sat back in his chair disappointed.

“I hear that bloody pirate Lion is still reeking havoc on every ship he comes across. Why, he has managed to send two of my best ships to the bottom of the sea already,” Chester said shoving half a dinner roll in his mouth..

“I don’t believe we should discuss the likes of that man around my daughter,” Henry said flustered that a man would bring something like that up in the presence of a lady.

“It’s all right father. I have heard for quite sometime about the Lion’s exploits. Though it is said that he doesn’t kill any of the crew members of the ships he plunders. He robs them and dismantles their ships. He actually sounds quite intriguing to me,” she finished staring directly into the fat mans eyes.

“Alexus!” her father gasped.

“He is still a thief, and he should be hanged,” Chester said with his mouth full. He took a loud gulp of brandy.

“Do you think a beggar on the streets should be hanged if he stole a single loaf of bread to survive?” Alexus asked feeling her temper begin to rise.

“Most defiantly,” he said.

“You’re a pig and a disgrace to human society,” Alexus spat.

“Enough!” Henry boomed. “Alexus that will be enough. You will apologize to Mr. Reynolds. That was very unlady like.”

“Father I am sick of the London society and their rules for a lady. Women shouldn’t be treated like they are a piece of property,” Alexus huffed.

“Excuse her, Mr. Reynolds,” her father apologized.

“Don’t make excuses for me father,” she said pushing her chair back. “If you’ll excuse me I feel that I am about to take on a headache,” she said crisply. She stood and walked towards the carriage. The nerve of that man, how could she marry someone who had no heart? She wouldn’t marry that man. There had to be a way out of the marriage. The footman helped her into the carriage and closed the door behind her.

“Home,” she said sharply.

She looked at her father as he stared out the window. She sensed there was something he wasn’t telling her. There had never been secrets between she and her father.

Hours later she heard the front door slam shut. She knew she was about to get the most severe tongue lashing of a life time. She had often been told her stubborn streak was going to get her into trouble, and now she was afraid it had. She knew that her behavior had been poor, but the fact was she just couldn’t stand Chester Reynolds.

A pounding on her bedroom door made her jump, and before she could bid him enter he barged through the door.

“What in the bloody hell did you think you were doing acting like that today. You called him a disgrace to human society?,” he bellowed.

Alexus tilted her chin defiantly, “I refuse to marry a man that can be so cruel.”

“Cruel? What on earth are you talking about girl.”

“He said beggars should be hanged if they stole a loaf of bread. I think that is cruel and I refuse to be married to a man that can be that heartless, and besides he is just repulsive.”

“He was merely making the comparison that thieves should be punished. He was referring to that dreaded pirate Lion,” Henry said.

“I won’t marry that man,” she said stubbornly.

She watched as her father’s face turned a shade of red. She had never seen him this angry before and she was beginning to regret what she had done.

“I’m sorry father,” she said quietly.

He walked over to the edge of the bed and sat beside her. He carefully took her hands in his own pausing a moment to stare at their daintiness. Her fingers were long and her fingernails were cat like, long and no doubt sharp.

“It’s okay my dear. Luckily Mr. Reynolds agreed to keep our arrangement of marriage.”

“But father, I don’t want to-”

“Alexus. This is my wish. Can you not be so stubborn for once in your life?”

She looked down at her father’s leathery hands. “As you wish, father,” she said sadly. She could feel her life withering away. Alexus closed her eyes and caught a brief glimpse of what the future would be like for the wife of Chester Reynolds. She would be dressed up like a porcelain doll for the public, and be forced to lie beneath his hulking mass in the bedroom. She shivered.

1 “That’s my good girl.” He stood and pulled a little box out of his pocket and handed it to her.

“What’s this,” she asked looking at the small velvet box.

“It’s your birthday present,” he said.

Alexus opened the box and pulled out the tiny gold chain. There was a small heart shaped locket.

“Your mother wanted to give this to you on your eighteenth birthday. Since she’s not here I figured I carry out her wish,” he said with tears in his sad eyes.

Alexus opened the locket with trembling fingers.

“Oh father. Its beautiful.” Tears flooded down her cheeks as she stared at the picture of her mother.

“Thank you father,” she said hugging him tightly.

“Your welcome dear. Now we must get to the matter at hand. Your behavior today was very inexcusable.”

“Like I said before, father, I am sorry for my behavior. It’s just that... I don’t want to marry some body I don’t love,” she said standing and walking to the window. She wanted to marry somebody who loved her and who she could love in return. For a brief moment she wondered what it would be like to be swept away by some dashing night and shinning armor.

“Love is a fickle thing, dear,” he said from behind her.

“I know you think so father, but I don’t agree with you,” she said sadly.

“Dear, it is for your own good,” he said placing his hand on her shoulder.

“But father,” she said turning around, “ I could marry any number of men in London. They would be my age and I am sure I could love them.”

“But Reynolds has made and offer to marry you sweetheart, and as your father I am obligated to see to what is best for you.”

“What if this isn’t the best for me father?” She insisted.

“Will you just trust me? Please my dear.”

Alexus looked at the floor and sighed. “Whatever you wish father. I must take a nap now. My head is killing me,” she said.

“Very well. Have a good rest dear,” he said quietly as he walked out the door.

Alexus flung herself face down on her bed. What was her father hiding from her? There was something more to this wedding then he was telling her, but what it was she still didn’t know. Alexus fell into a deep sleep.
Henry walked down the stairs and into his office. His conversation with Chester Reynolds still playing in his head.
“You’ll do good to remind your daughter what her place is as a woman. I’ll have no wife of mine talking to me like that.”
“Yes sir. Maybe this marriage isn’t such a good idea. Alexus is still so young,” Henry said having second thoughts about the arrangement.
“We had a deal, Henry. I pay off your debts and I get your daughter’s hand in marriage. I’ve held up my end of the deal now it is time you hold your part of the deal, or I’ll take payment back,” Chester threatened.
“Don’t threaten me,” Henry said standing.
“I believe I can do what ever I like. You see I have the upper hand, or need I remind you? If I don’t get your daughters hand I will be forced to take drastic measures,” he said quietly.
Fearing what the man might do he agreed and took leave.

Henry took down a glass and poured the last of his brandy into the crystal container. He sat behind his large mahogany desk. His once beautiful things he had sold to make some payments on his debts. He had sold all of the silver and the most expensive things in the house he could without Alexus becoming suspicious. He had sold his father's pocket watch and several other of his possessions. What was he going to do? He rubbed his throbbing temples. How could he let his only daughter marry a man like Chester Reynolds? He then knew what he had to do. He closed his eyes and hoped he was prayed that he was doing the right thing.

Alexus and Henry sat quietly at dinner. It had been to her request that she didn’t have a birthday party. She looked across the table at her father and noticed he looked a little more sad than usual. He was pushing his food around his plate not even seeing what was in front of him.
“Father, you must tell me what is bothering you. I can’t handle seeing you distraught like this,” she pleaded.
“All right darling,” he began, “ I am giving you a chance to get out of this marriage arrangement, but you must not ask questions. Can you do that?”
Alexus stared at her father not sure what to say. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“You really mean I am not going to have to marry him.”
“Yes dear. Your aunt Clair has been after me for sometime for you to go visit her.”
“Really!” Alexus exclaimed excitedly. She hadn’t been to the Bahamas since she was a child.
“You will be leaving on the ship Emerald Tiger tomorrow at dawn,” he continued.
“Why so early father?”
“So Mr. Reynolds won’t see you leaving.”
“Why are you doing this, father?”
“Darling, I asked you not to ask questions. Do you want to go or not?”
“Of coarse, but it is so soon,” she said hesitantly.
“It is now or never. I have already arranged for your maid to accompany you. Now hurry and pack some things. You won’t be able to pack much, just what you need for the journey. You can purchase some things when you reach Aunt Clair's,” he said smiling.

Alexus was beside herself with joy. She couldn’t wait to be out in the warm sunshine. She hated the London weather. It was so damp and cold, and the stench on the streets was overwhelming.. She remembered the gossip when she had returned from the Bahamas before. It was thought indecent for the ladies in the social circles to have tanned skin. She couldn’t wait to put her feet in the blue water. She wondered if she would meet some dashing islander. Then a thought hit her. Her father was defiantly hiding something. They had always been honest with each other and his deception made her heart ache. She wondered if it was a good idea to be leaving her father behind.

Seeing the doubt in his daughter’s beautiful eyes he smiled. “Now why are you looking so down, dear girl. You have been after me for years to return to your Aunt’s.”

“I know father, but I can’t help but to think you are not telling me everything. It’s almost like you want to be rid of me,” she said softly.

“Nonsense,” he scoffed, “I don’t want you to ever think that way. I’ll join you in a few months. I have got to close up some business deals. I just didn’t figure you wanted to wait around.” He hated lying to his to her, but there were some things that just couldn't be said.

“Yes, father. I trust you,” she said smiling warmly. Those words cut through Henry’s heart like a knife.

“Off to your room now. Mary has already began to pack a small bag for you. You are going to need your rest. It is a long journey and you will be leaving early.”

Alexus stood and walked over to her father. She bent and gently placed a kiss on the bald spot on his head. She had kissed his bald spot ever since she was old enough to walk.

“Good night father,” she smiled.

“Night, dear girl.”

Mary helped Alexus pack her things. They packed three simple dresses and one extravagant one, under garments, a sheer night dress made of French lace, and her toilette items.

After assessing her luggage, she yawned and sat in front of her vanity mirror. She watched as Mary removed the hair pins. The heavy mass fell softly down her back. She slipped into her satin night rail and slid between her cool sheets.

“Are you excited, Mary?” She asked sleepily.

“Oh yes, miss. I never been to the Bahamas b’fore,” she said quietly.

“You’ll love it. We don’t have to be so proper all the time. The beaches are..... so... beautiful,” she finished as she fell into a deep slumber.

Mary quietly pulled the door closed behind her. She was elated about the adventure she was about to embark on. Perhaps she would even fall in love. Alexus wasn’t the only one who daydreamed about love. Maybe she would even get some color to her pale skin. She thought about her mission and silently skipped down the hall, determined not to let the Winsmore family down.

A cool sweat broke out on her forehead. Her breaths were coming in short pants as her lover kissed her neck softly. Alexus knew she was dreaming but she refused to wake. His face was shrouded in the darkness. His body was hard and rigid and her hands slid softly over him. She didn’t know who he was, but she felt like there was something pulling her to him. She tried to see his face and was disappointed when all she could see was dark shadows.

She ran her hands over his broad shoulders and a moan of pleasure escaped her lips. She wriggled with delight. His hands explored her body, gently touching her, and exploring her most hidden places. His mouth kissed the valley between her breasts and his hands work magic. Her blood began to boil making the cool night air around her seem warm. Something was happening to her, but what it was she couldn’t put a finger on. Pressure began to build in her abdomen. She arched her hips against his midsection. Her body was aching with desire, but before she reached what she was sure to be exquisite pleasure she awoke.

Her breathing was ragged and irregular. She sat up and looked at her surroundings. Her night dress clung to her damp body. She felt warmth between her thighs and flushed with embarrassment. She had had the same dream for several weeks, always ending in the same fever pitched awakening, before reaching heaven.

Alexus padded over to the doors leading to her balcony. She stepped out and let the cool night air rush over her fevered body. She couldn’t keep her thoughts from returning to the dream. What did it mean? She didn’t know, but whatever it meant couldn’t be bad, she decided. She turned and walk back to her room. She looked over her shoulder and into the night. Was this man from her dreams really out there.

Alexus and her father stood on the pier, along with Mary and her mother. They watched as Mary hugged her mother tightly. With tear filled eyes Mary’s mother stepped to Henry’s side. Henry took Alexus into his arms and pulled her close. He prayed silently that when she found out the real reason he was sending her away, she would forgive him. Tears misted his eyes.

“Be a good girl,” he whispered.

“I will papa, and I promise to write as soon as we arrive,” she sniffed.

“That will be good,” he said.

“I love you father,” she said stepping back.

“And I you, my sweet daughter,” he said sadly.

The captain appeared and quietly cleared his throat.

“Your bags have been loaded, miss. If you are ready we need to sail so’s we won’t miss the tide,” he said politely.

“Yes’sir,” Alexus said. She gave her father one last squeeze and walked to the edge of the pier.

Two men from the Emerald Tiger waited in the jolly boat to help the two women. The man that lifted Alexus into the boat was a bear of a man. His arms were as big as cannons and his chest was as massive as a for hundred year old oak tree. He gave her a big toothless grin and she couldn’t help but to smile back at him.

The first rays of sunlight peaked over the line where sky met ocean. Alexus turned and watched her father turn into a tiny speck. She couldn’t see the ship through the dense fog until the side of the jolly boat bumped into the hull. Alexus peered upwards at the massive ship, and gasped softly. It was the largest thing she had ever seen in her life.

From somewhere above a rope swing was lowered for the ladies and a latter was lowered for the men. The captain of the ship helped Alexus in the swing and with a swift tug on the rope Alexus began to rise towards the ship’s deck. Once they were safely aboard they were guided to their cabin. The cabin on the ship wasn’t as large as her room but it was spacious none the less. Mary put their things away and went and sat in the high back chair across from Alexus.

“I am so excited,” Alexus gushed.

“So am I, miss,” Mary replied with her eyes lowered.

“Mary, you mustn’t be so formal. We are friends, are we not.”

“Yes, miss,” she said shyly.

“Then start treating me like one. You must call me Alexus."

“Okay,” Mary replied.

There was a knock at the door. Alexus bid them to enter and a short man is a military uniform and a bright red beard appeared in the doorway.

“The captain would like to know if ye lasses would like to take a tour of the ship?”

“That would be delightful,” Alexus said happily.

“If ye would follow me." Then he turned and looked at the women. “The sun be a bit warm already. If’n ye have one of them shade thingys you might want to bring it along.” Mary walked over to the wall wardrobe and pulled out two brightly colored parasols.

They strolled around the deck as the captain explained what all the masts and sails were used for. They learned that the little man who had came to their door was called Dobson. The captains name was Sir Greggory Charles Daniel White. The hours passed as Greggory told them of the ships gadgets and Alexus noticed that Mary was hanging on his every word. She looked at the captain like a puppy in love. Why shouldn’t she be, she thought. The captain was tall and handsome. He had short black hair and intensely dark eyes. She caught the look in the captain’s eyes when he looked at Mary and Alexus couldn’t help but to think that he was smitten with her as well. Deciding to leave the two alone she retired to her cabin.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to go with you, Alexus,” Mary asked arching a delicate brow. She was still uncomfortable using Alexus’ first name.

“Mary I am quite capable of being alone in the cabin. Besides I want to take a nap and there is no reason for you to be in there when you are so wide awake.”

“Very well,” Mary said.

“Do you need someone to escort you?” Greggory asked.

“That won’t be necessary, Captain White,” she said smiling, “ I believe I can find it on my own.”

“Have a pleasant rest,” he said bowing gallantly.

Alexus took her time getting back to their cabin. She observed how the crew seemed to work effortlessly and even happily. She smiled when she saw Mary and the captain at the wheel. She disappeared into the companion way.

When Alexus returned to her room she lie back on the bunk. It was softer than she had expected. The gentle rocking of the ship lulled her into a peaceful slumber. When she awoke, night had stole into the cabin and there were several candles lit. Mary was humming softly and brushing her hair. It was the first time Alexus had ever seen the girl with her hair down. She had golden hair that flowed down her back in soft waves. It went well the her turquoise eyes and slim figure.

“Why are you in such a good mood?” Alexus asked startling the girl.

“The captain has asked us to dinner,” she said smiling.

“I think it would be best if I ate in here tonight and let the two of you get to know each other better,” Alexus said stretching her arms over her head.

“Oh but you must join us,” Mary said turning to Alexus.

“All right but I have something I think you should wear.”

Mary stared at Alexus with curiosity. She didn’t know what her friend was talking about. Alexus stood and walked over to the wardrobe and pulled out a gown.

“Alexus, I can’t wear that,” Mary gasped.

“Of coarse you can,” Alexus said smiling.

“But it is yours,” she insisted.

“Mary, it is about time you have something nice to wear,” Alexus said firmly.

“But it is so beautiful.”

“And you will be to,” Alexus said. Alexus began to twist and tug on Mary’s hair and when she was finished she had it fashioned on top of her head it. It was a mass of blond curls and ringlets. Tiny tendrils fell around her face and the base of her neck. Next Alexus helped Mary into the navy satin gown.

She buttoned the tiny pearl buttons on the back of the gown. The dress was made out of the finest Irish lace and French satin. There were hundreds of tiny seed beads on the bodice of the dress, and on the skirt of the gown there were tiny lace roses sewn on.

When Mary turned around Alexus gasped. She was beautiful. The dress was almost a perfect fit. The bodice was a little smaller due to the fact that Mary was bigger busted then herself, but the dress looked better on Mary then it ever had on Alexus.

“You are so beautiful,” Alexus said.

“Thank you,” Mary said blushing.

Alexus got dressed quickly and they joined the captain in his cabin for dinner. There was a roasted lamb served with a delicious plumb sauce accompanied by fresh bread and several exotic fruits. Alexus sat back and listened to the captain tell his exciting stories, and watched as Mary hung on every word he said. Alexus sipped her wine and found her thoughts wondering to her dreams. She had had another one during her nap and was embarrassed when she had awaken and found Mary in the room.

She wondered if she was ever going to be as happy as Mary appeared to be at the moment. She sighed softly. She so wanted to find someone she could fall in love with. She thought about what life would be like on the island. Life on the island was much different then life in London. It was more relaxed and not so proper. The men worked and weren’t so pale and sickly. Most of the men didn’t wear the wigs that the foppish dandies did in London. This was a new life for Alexus and she was going to make the most of it.

The mention of the notorious pirate the Lion brought Alexus out of her haze.

“I hope we don’t come across him,” Mary shivered.

“Rest be assured, my dear, he is no where near here,” Captain White assured.

“I’ve heard that he is quite dashing,” Alexus spoke up.

“That may be the story that young women are told to abate their fears, but I happen to know that the man is heartless. His pillages and plunders ships taking what he wants and leaving the rest,” the captain said taking a sip of wine.

“But he doesn’t kill. Am I correct?” Alexus pushed.

“I have never heard of him killing unless provoked,” the captain said reluctantly

“Just because he robs does that mean he is heartless?” Alexus defended.

“No I suppose not,” Captain White said smiling. He admired her spunk. She was defiantly going to be a hand full for some man in the future.

“Well I believe I’m going to turn in,” Alexus said standing. She had a feeling that the captain and Mary wished to be alone.

“Must you go?” The captain asked politely.

“I believe three is a crowd,” she said winking at Mary.

“I’ll be back shortly,” Mary said.

“Take your time,” Alexus said smiling. “Thank you for the lovely evening captain.”

“My pleasure,” he said bowing to at the waist, "sleep well.”

Alexus took a little stroll around the deck. The wind ruffled her skirt around her ankles. She moved to the rail and stared out across the expanse of black water. She was amazed at how the ocean seemed to be two totally different bodies of water. During the day it was alive and vibrant with life. At night is was quiet and peaceful. The stars in the distant seemed to disappear beneath the water’s surface. There were stars as far as her eyes could see. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The tang of the salty sea air filled her lungs. Getting a bit chilled she decided to retire to her cabin.

“You look lovely this evening,” Captain White commented softly.

“Thank you,” Mary said thankful for the darkness, so he couldn’t see her blushing.

“You deserve to be commented every day of your life,” he said.

“Captain White, you are too kind,” she said.

“Greg. You must call me Greg,” he insisted.

They stood by the enormous wheel both looking out into the night. Each were lost in their own thoughts, but both could feel the pull of the other. Greg turned and lowered his mouth to Mary’s. His lips brushed hers softly.

Mary kissed back and then pushed herself away. What was she doing? It wasn’t lady like to be alone with a man. She turned and began to walk away.

“Mary,” Greg called.

Mary turned and looked at him with passion filled eyes. She didn’t know what she was supposed to do.

“Goodnight captain,” she said quietly. She disappeared into the dark companion way.

Greg just stared after her, wondering if he was ever going to understand women.

His hand trailed up her thigh, searching for her secret treasure. She sighed as he rubbed the core of her womanhood. He moved above her and captured her lips. He tasted faintly of coffee. He gently parted her knees and knelt between them. He slowly slid into her wetness.

She took him in completely locking her ankles behind his back. They rocked with the rhythm man has known since the dawn of time. She felt the familiar pressure growing in the pit of her stomach. She began to pant softly and perspiration broke out in little beads across her forehead.

“Lexi,” he whispered before he stood. He backed away into the shadows and disappeared.

“No, please don’t go,” Alexus pleaded.

Alexus opened her eyes and looked at her surroundings. When she sat up she saw someone standing at the foot of her bed. She rubbed her eyes and tried to focus on who was in the room with her. Finally she realized it was it was Mary.

“Mary? What’s wrong? Why are you crying?” Alexus asked alarmed.

“I don’t know what to do, Alexus. I am so confused. Greg kissed me and I felt all warm inside but I knew it twasn’t proper so I left. Oh, what do I do,” she said with out taking a breath.

“Honey, it’s okay,” Alexus said pulling the sobbing girl into her arms.

“I really like the captain. What do I do?”

“What does your heart tell you to do?” Alexus asked.

“I want to be with him, but is there such thing as falling in love with someone after one day?”

“Of course there is. I wish it would happen to me,” Alexus said wistfully.

Her mood brightened, Mary began to chat nonstop about the captain. She told Alexus every detail of their evening. Though Alexus was happy for her friend she couldn’t help but to feel a bit jealous. Would their friendship change?

While Mary rattled on Alexus found her mind wondering off towards her dream. It had felt so real. She wondered why she kept having the same dream. She shook her head clear of the erotic dream and tried to focus on what Mary was saying.

Hours later, after the girls were asleep, Alexus sat up in bed. What had awaken her, she wasn’t sure. She looked around and she felt a charge of electricity in the air. Then she heard it, gunfire, followed by a howl of pain. She looked out the port holes and it was still dark. She listened harder and then she heard the hurried foot falls on deck. What was wrong?

Alexus ran to the door to turn the lock but yelped with surprise when the door suddenly collapsed in front of her. There before her, in the dimly lit hall, stood two burly looking men. Neither one of the Alexus recognized. The bigger one hoisted Alexus over his shoulder.

“Put me down you dumb olf,” she demanded pounding on his back.

The smaller one of the two pushed past them and rummaged through the contents on the room. Mary was wide awake and huddled in the corner in terror.

After they were finished the other grabbed Mary and threw her over his shoulder. Mary screamed as she and Alexus were being forced up on deck. When they reached the deck all eyes were turned towards them. Neither one had been given the chance to pull on a wrapper to cover their night gowns. In the pale moon light they were almost completely transparent.

They stood in front of their abductors silently. Alexus stared around. To her surprise there was hardly any blood shed. There was one of captain White’s crew nursing a broken arm. Other than that she noticed that there were just a few scrapes and bruises. Suddenly a shadow fell over them and Alexus tilted her head upwards. She stared into a masked face and she suddenly felt her knees go weak with fright.

“What have we here?” He asked huskily.

“Found’em in one ‘o the cabins cap’n,” came a voice from behind Alexus.

“Well I guess this evening won’t be a complete waste,” he said turning towards the captain White, “since you carry nothing of value to me, perhaps I will take these two lovely women and ransom them. I’m sure they’ll fetch a healthy sum of money.” He looked over his shoulder to Alexus.

Suddenly her fear was replaced by anger when she saw the look of terror on Mary’s face. She had just found love and it was to be taken away in the same night. She would not allow it.

Alexus cleared her throat and stepped forward.

“Please, sir. Take me. You will gain much more money from my ransom than from her. You see she is but my servant She only has a mother and she works for my father.”

The big pirate turned to face the beauty. He was impressed by her boldness, but he didn’t miss the fire that glimmered in her beautiful eyes. This was going to be interesting. Deciding not to let her know he would do as she asked, he decided to see how angry he could make her.

“I don’t know. Your father would pay double the price for the both of you. Why should I just ransom you, when I could make double the money?”

Gritting her teeth with anger, “because if you ask for double the price, my father will give you double the price, you half wit,” she bit.

“Besides money, I know your father will give me, what will you give me,” he said ignoring her insult.

“If you think I will give myself to you willingly, like some wanton whore, you are sorely mistaken. It will be a cold day in hell,” she hissed. She stood toe to toe with the man and he towered over her, but it didn’t cause her to back down.

“Such language, for a lady,” he mocked.

Alexus jerked her head away and glared at the velvet mask he wore over his face. It covered his face but not his hair. His hair was golden from long hours in the sun and it was tied at the nape of his neck with a red strip of leather. The mask left his chin and mouth exposed.

“You shouldn’t judge, for it is not like a gentleman to make such bold suggestions,” she retorted.

“M’lady I never claimed to be a gentleman,” he said grinning, “ I’m just a humble pirate trying to make a living.”

“Off of everyone else. What’s wrong, didn't you have parents who gave you enough love when you were a child, or did they teach you to rob and plunder. Is that why you have to prey on innocent people?” She shot vehemently.

“That’s enough,” he boomed. “I will tell you this once, and only once. If you ever speak ill of my parents again, I will kill you. To hell with the ransom.” Anger radiated off his body.

Fear returned to Alexus and her bravery was short lived. She only nodded her head. The big pirate turned his back to her and faced captain White.

“You can take this one with you. Carry a message to her father. He is to send fifty pounds of gold to New Providence in a months time if he ever wants to see his daughter again.” He turned his back and began to bark commands to his crew.

The pirate nodded over his shoulder for one of his crewman to escort her below deck. Once back on deck Mary placed the sealed envelope in Alexus’s trembling hands.

Tears streamed down both girl’s faces. Soft sobs escaped from Mary.

“I’ll never forget what you did for me,” Mary sobbed.

“We’ll see each other again. Not to worry,” Alexus said with more confidence then she felt. She hugged her friend tightly.

Before she could say anything else she was being swept into a pair of strong arms. She looked and it was the masked pirate. He stood on the side of the ship and turned to captain White and his crew.

“Put me down you son of a sea snake,” she screamed pounding his back with her tiny fists.

“The Lion bids you goodnight,” he said bowing gallantly and ignoring the pounding on his back. He clung to a rope and sailed across the gap between the two ships. Alexus eyes grew wide with fear when she looked at the churning sea beneath her. He landed with both feet on the deck of his ship with all the grace of a cat. The grappling hooks were cut and the ship disappeared into the night, just as silently as it had appeared.

Lion stood Alexus upright and faced her. She really was a beauty but she couldn’t be more then a girl. Her hair was a messy disarray around her face and she was clinging effortlessly to the front of her night shift. He attempts were in vain, for the Lion could see the gentle curves of her body. She might be a mere girl in age, but she had the body of a full grown woman. He knew if he left her alone his crew might take a notion and get friendly with her. He had a good crew but any man with brains in his head would want to be near this lovely woman. He felt bad that their last venture had been fruitless. He decided he would give all the ransom money to the crew.

“Let me go,” Alexus hissed.

“Well you are free to go, ma’dam,” he said swinging his arms wide.

Looking around Alexus realized that he was being coy with her, and anger tickled the tiny hairs on the back of her neck.

“Oh, you’re despicable,” she hissed.

Turing from her and facing his crew he spoke loudly and with authority.

“Since this voyage was fruitless. When we receive the ransom for....” He said turning to Alexus. “I don’t believe I’ve had the pleasure of knowing your name.”

“It is Alexus Winsmore,” she said haughtily.

“...Alexus, it will be divided equally between the lot of you. I will not partake in a share since it was my idea to plunder that ship. Is that fair?” He finished.

“Aye,” came the excited cheer from his crew.

“Ye be a fair cap’n,” came a reply from a short man.

“You have been a good crew,” he replied.

“Cap’n we managed to get a keg o’ rum from that vessel, so twasn’t a complete waste o’ time,” a tall rail of a man replied.

“Then you shall party tonight. Set a dog watch, since it is a dead calm tonight we might as well enjoy a time without work,” The Lion instructed.

The men let out a roar that echoed over the smooth placid ocean. The Lion turned to his first mate. “Chaz escort Ms. Winsmore to my cabin and lock the door on your way out,” he said.

“I will not stay in your cabin. It isn’t proper,” Alexus fumed. The nerve of the man implying that she was to stay in the same room with him. She wouldn’t do it, she decided.

“Would you rather stay with the crew in their quarters? I’m sure they would love to make you feel welcome,” he turned to his crew “ how about it men. Would you like for Ms. Winsmore to bunk with you?”

They crew cheered and made rude comments.

“I’ll make’er feel real welcome,” one fat pirate said placing his hands on his groin and rubbing himself.

Out of fear Alexus clung to Lion’s arm. Something kin to an electrical current bolted its way up his arm. He looked down at her and smiled. He would never turn her over to his men. He didn’t have the heart to do things like that. He was known ocean wide for his kind heart when it came to his plunders. He never harmed women like most of his pirate predecessors. He didn’t take from the poor and he never killed unless he was provoked. He loved a the feel of a fight just as much as his crew, but he didn’t want to be the cause of unnecessary slaughter. He wouldn’t ever back down from a challenge for he thought it was weak. Clearing his head he repeated his order to his first mate.

“Aye, cap’n,” Chaz said.

Chaz gently put Alexus in front of him and guided her to the companion way. Once in the lit hall she looked at the man beside her, and was shocked at his appearance. He didn’t appear to be someone that would be considered a pirate. Now that she thought about it none of the men had resembled the pirates she had heard tales about. They had been somewhat clean. This particular pirate was imposingly tall with a broad back. The sleeveless shirt fit like a second skin. She could see a piece of a tattoo from beneath the shirt. His hair was a shiny black and it fell beneath his shoulders. His skin was tanned to a rich golden hue. He had a finely chiseled face with a proud chin. Even in the dim light Alexus could see his long black eyelashes. He towered over her by a good eight inches.

Feeling her eyes on him, Chaz turned to the little beauty. “What are you thinking, little one?” He asked in a soft tone.

“Just wondering,” she said glad that the lack of lighting hid the heat in her cheeks.

“Wondering what?” He pressed.

“How it was that you are a pirate?” she finished.

“That is a story for another time,” he said stopping before a door marked captain.

Alexus paled when she realized where she was.

“You can’t be serious? Why, it isn’t proper for me to stay in here with that man,” she sputtered.

“Look among you, little one, there isn’t a one of us that care about formalities,” he said boldly.

“Will I be safe with him?” She asked.

“Safer with him then with anyone else in this crew. Ma’am,” he said.

“What about you, the Lion must trust you,” she said tilting her head.

“That is because I’m his first mate and I’ve proved time and again my loyalties with the captain.”

The door swung open to a massive room. Alexus turned when she heard the door shut behind her. She heard a key turn in the lock and she ran to the door. She pounded on it’s rough surface until her hands were raw.

“You’ll be sorry. You’ll all be sorry. I swear I’ll cut your hearts out and feed them to the sharks, you no good worthless sea urchins,” she screamed. She crossed the room and hurled a crystal goblet at the door. It shattered and crashed to the floor. Alexus flew to the bed and was wracked with sobs.

On the other side of the door Chaz chuckled. His captain had his work cut out for him. She was going to be as wild as a lioness and he couldn’t wait to see the fur fly when his captain and the beautiful girl clashed. It was going to be a show in deed.

Above deck the Lion had removed his velvet mask. He allowed the cool air to wash over him. He sensed Chaz beside him before he even saw him.

“Did we make sure our little guest is comfortable?” He asked.

“I did all I could, but I don’t think she likes the accommodations,” Chaz said laughing.

“Why do you say that?” The Lion asked smiling.

“Lets just say you are going to have a hell of a time taming this one,” he said.

“We’ll see. We’ll see,” he repeated.

They stood in a silence staring out into the still night. The little minx made his blood boil. He could tell that she was strong willed and sharp tongued. Yes, indeed, she would be a challenge for him.

She paced the large cabin nervously. What was the pirate going to do to her? Would he ravage her and beat her? Something inside her told her that he wouldn’t harm her. She didn’t know what but she didn’t feel real danger around him. She had to escape, but how. He had been right where was she going to go. There was nothing but sea for hundreds of miles around them. She could jump over board and swim but she quickly dismissed that foolish notion. It wouldn’t wise with other pirates roaming the waters. She sighed with exasperation and slumped back on the soft bunk.

She pulled her legs to her chest and rested her chin on her knees. What was she going to do? A weapon, she thought lifting her head. She could find a weapon and hold him and demand his crew to take her to her destination. Yes she could do it. She began to rummage through the semi-dark room. She pulled the drawers out on his desk and didn’t find anything. She went through all the sea chests and found elaborate dresses and under things but no weapon. She went through what seemed like hundreds of books and was amazed at the variety of authors. There was a thick book full of Shakespeare’s Sonnets, a book by some unknown author, and one by Chacer. She removed a heavy candle holder from the shelf. It wasn’t what she had in mind but it would work. She took her weapon and stretched out on the bunk not realizing how tired she was. She turned her back to the door and placed the weapon under the pillow. She would wait for him to make his move and she would do it. Her thoughts began to become fuzzy. The mattress was so soft and the pillow was made of soft goose down. Alexus’ eyes drifted shut.

Three days had passed and she hadn’t seen anyone but the cabin boy who brought her her meals. She was getting restless. She moved to the bookshelf and removed a book. She positioned herself in a chair and tucked the candlestick beside her in the chair.

Several hours later a knock sounded on the door.

“Who is it?” She called.

“Lion,” came the reply from the other side.

“What do you want?” She asked vehemently.

“Can I come in?” He asked.

“Tis your ship, captain, do as you wish,” she replied coolly.

The lock turned in the door and it slowly creaked open. Lion stepped in, his large frame filling the doorway. Alexus looked up from the book and couldn’t help but to openly admire her captor. He was tall and well built. He wore black breeches that hugged him tightly. A pair of black boots covered his legs to his knees. He also wore a white shirt that was only buttoned part of the way. It fell open giving her a glimpse of a very well chiseled and tanned chest. His hair was the color of honey lightened by the sun, and he kept it bound by a leather strap. He had a strong jaw and a prominent nose. She couldn’t make out the rest of his face due to the silk mask covering it. She could tell he was a very attractive man and she could feel herself being drawn to him unwillingly.

“I see you have made yourself comfortable,” he said.

1 “You have quite the selection of books in here for a pirate. I didn’t think they knew how to read,” she said nastily.

“On the contrary, I love to read and I can also speak three different languages,” he replied. He crossed the room and poured himself a shot of rum. He swallowed the contents with one gulp. He poured himself another trying to drink away the sight of the girl as he had entered the room. She had looked so young and innocent sitting there awaiting his arrival. She looked as if she was about to be admonished for stealing a cookie before dinner.

Alexus saw her chance and stood quietly. She slowly crept up behind him raising the blunt weapon high above her head. She wondered if she could really kill a man. Before she could bring it down he turned, and with the quickness of a cat he had her pinned against the wall.

“I’d advise you to think twice before you kill me,” he said. He was so close to her he could smell the faint fragrance of vanilla. Her body was pressed seductively against his and it drove him mad. Her delicate pink mouth begged for him to kiss her. He bent his head and touched his lips to hers. Her response was surprising. She felt as if her whole body was going to burn from the inside out.

“Let me go,” she hissed.

“If I do that, you will bury that thing to the hilt in my back,” he said.

“So, if I do I will be free of you,” she retorted.

“On the contrary. If you kill me then there will be no one to protect you from my crew. You would be better served to jump overboard and let the sharks have that pretty hide of yours. It would be a fate much welcomed to what you would endure with the likes of my men,” he said. He saw the horror flash in her eyes and he knew that she wouldn’t try to kill him again. He slowly released her arm and stepped away. Her nearness was having a disturbing affect on him and he did not miss the affect his body was having on her.

Lion released her and moved away. The absence of his body felt strange to her and she found herself secretly wishing it back to hers.

“I came in here to tell you that I will be sleeping in here tonight. I have been bunking with Chaz the past few nights and I can’t get any sleep due to the fact he snores so horribly.”

She looked at him in horror.

“Don’t worry, Madam, I’ll not harm you as long as you promise to do the same,” he said.

She stared at him for a long moment and then nodded her head. She watched as Lion left the room and a sigh escaped her lips.

Lion rested his head on the door and let out a sigh of relief. Had he not turned when he did, he would been lying in his own pool of blood while his crew had their way with her. He was lucky to notice the candle missing from it’s mate on the shelf. He could still taste the sweetness of her lips on his. What was she doing to him?

The key turned in the lock and he stepped inside the dark room. He lit a candle and what he saw took his breath away. She was asleep on the bunk and her gown had fallen from her shoulder and exposed the top of a single creamy breast. She lie half on her side, half on her back. Her arm was cast over her face. He watched as her chest rose and fell with each breath she took. She truly was a beautiful creature. He remembered the sweet taste of her lips.

Lion unbuttoned his shirt and cast it to the corner. He walked over to his desk to look over some charts. Once finished with his charts he removed his boots and his breeches. He was exhausted, it had been a long and tiring day. Not to mention a fruitless one. He looked over to the sleeping girl she was snoring softly. He rarely took prisoners on because it was to much hassle.

He blew out the candle and removed his mask. He slowly crawled into the bed beside his prisoner. He could still smell vanilla on her. He picked up a piece of hair and rubbed it between his thumb and forefinger. It felt like silk. He brought it to his face took a deep breath. It was her hair that smelt like vanilla and roses. He released her hair and turned his back to her. What was this little siren doing to him. He didn’t even know her and he was already infatuated with her. He wanted to touch her, but he reminded himself that she was just a girl and not a woman. With that last thought he fell into a deep sleep.

She felt his lips searing her skin where ever they touched. She sighed and he burned a trail down her neck. She knew she was dreaming again but she didn’t want to wake up, she wanted to find out who her lover was. She wrapped her hands around his neck and pulled his lips to meet hers. Their tongues danced and tasted. He tasted so real. He moved from her lips to her ear. He kissed the soft shell of her ear and she shivered with delight. He moved down to the hollow of her neck and kissed her pulse.

He continued to burn a fiery trail of kisses. He gently kissed her collar bone before removing the tiny buttons, on the front of her gown, from their hooks. Her breast spilled forward from her bodice and the cool night air caressed them softly, only it wasn’t the air, it was his mouth. He lavished her nipple until it was pebble hard, before he moved to the next one. After giving it the same attention to the other, he began to kiss his way down her stomach. He gently kissed her navel, while his hand slid beneath her gown. She gasped at his touch. He began to gently stroke the swollen nub of her desire. She wriggled with delight.

Something was wrong. This dream wasn’t like any other she had before. It seemed too real. She forced her eyes opened and gasped. He was there at her stomach kissing her like he had all the right in the world. She gave a small shriek and he looked up.

“Relax love. I can take you to places you never dreamed of,” he whispered huskily.

“I can’t... I’ve never done this before,” she stammered. She wanted to tell him know but her body screamed yes.

“I’ll stop, if you wish. I wouldn’t to do anything that you don’t want,” he said. He awaited her reply wondering if he truly could stop. He had been awoke by her hand brazenly running over his chest. She had kissed him softly.

She tried to form the words to tell him to stop but couldn’t. She tried to fight the already growing desire he stirred deep with in. She knew that she shouldn’t allow him such liberties with her body. They barely knew each other and yet she didn’t fear him like she should.

He took her lack of words as a sign to proceed. He continued to lavish kisses upon her stomach. Lion gently eased her knees apart and knelt between them. He gently separated the soft petals that protected her secret desire.

“Relax darlin’, you’re going to feel a little bit of pain, but it will be over soon. Do you trust me?” He asked.

She nodded slightly and prepared for his entry. He swiftly thrust himself in her warm depths feeling her maiden head give way. He paused letting her adjust to his size.

“Are you okay,” he asked. She nodded again. He bent and placed a soft kiss on her mouth. The pain wasn’t as bad as she had thought, and it slowly subsided.

He slowly began to rock back and forth pacing himself so he would not find release to soon. He almost lost his control when she thrust her hips upward driving him deeper within her. His thrusts became quicker and she eagerly met each one with her own thrusts. Together they swayed, linked not only by the passion between them, but by something else. Something that drove them together with more force than a hammer striking an anvil.

Alexus felt a tightening in the pit of her stomach. It was coiling like a snake ready to spring on it’s prey. Her body was being lifted towards the stars. She knew she was on the edge of something wonderful and right as she began to reach for it, it slid out of her grasp.

“Not yet love,” he whispered withdrawing from her warmth. He wanted to erase the pain he had just caused her. He wanted to take her to a new place. He placed feather light kisses on her eyes and her nose. She became more bold in her movements and allowed her hands to roam freely over him. His muscles rippled beneath her touch. She marveled at the smoothness of his skin.

“You don’t know what you do to me,” he said moving from her grasp.

They both shuddered as they found their release. Soon they came drifting back down to earth together. Alexus snuggled close to her pirate lover. Her emotions ebbed and flowed like the tide. She was happy about what had just happened, but then she felt badly about it. She had never acted so brazen in her life. She would never again be fit to marry. What would happen when Lion was through with her and cast her aside? She would be considered tainted and no man would have her. Suddenly her state of euphoria crashed down around her and was replaced with anger. She threw the coverlet back and bound out of bed.

“Where are you going, love?” He asked.

“Stop calling me that. I am not your love. I’m not your anything. You seduced me into giving myself up to you and now no man will have me,” she cried.

“What if I want you?” Lion said confused about her current mood change. Women were fickle creatures.

“You will use me when it suits you, and then what?” She said.

“What if I don’t want to get rid of you. What if I want you by my side?” He said swinging his feet over the edge of the bed. He knew how ludicrous the statement really was. Lion knew he couldn’t have a woman aboard his ship, it was considered bad luck. It would mean she would be in harms way every night and day. Damn the woman for mixing his emotions. She had wove her siren’s spell around him, and he had fallen for it.

“Let me go,” she screamed.

“No,” he retorted.

“I hate you,” she screamed.

“I will let you go when the mood suits me, and not a moment before then,” he boomed.

“Get out of here,” she screamed.

“I’ll tell you now. No one orders me around my ship. I will leave now, but I will be back every night to share this bed,” he said. He had no real intention of taking advantage of her, but he wanted to scare the hell out of her. He stormed from the room only half dressed, pausing only long enough to lock the door behind him.

“Damn you to the bottom of the sea,” she yelled pounding her fists on the door.

Alexus barely saw Lion for the next week. He only came to the room when it was late and left before she awoke. The only person she saw was the little mute cabin boy who brought her meals. She was sitting Lion’s chair behind his desk when the ship lurched violently, spilling the contents of the shelves onto the floor. All was still and then a few minutes later the ship lurched again, this time it was accompanied by a loud crack. Chaz burst through the door.

“Come with me,” he said taking her arm.

“What is happening?” She asked.

“We’re under attack. You must hide.”

Fear choked Alexus as she was being dragged down a series of halls. The room they arrived in was large and had several tables in the center. She gathered it was the galley. Chaz roughly shoved her into a small space under the counter.

“Stay here, and if you value your life don’t come out for anything,” he said.

Chaz left Alexus huddled in the tiny whole. Her body shook with fear. She didn’t know what was going on but she hoped Lion was safe. At that moment Alexus heard heavy footsteps followed by thick voices.

“Check every where fer some booty. Ye find it ye keeps it,” said one of the men. Alexus pressed herself further back into her little whole, and by doing so she knocked a pan to the floor. Alexus held her breath as it clattered noisily across the floor.

“Jako, over here,” one of the men shouted. All went quiet and Alexus released her breath. Before she knew what happened she was being dragged by the hair by a pair of strong hands. When she was brought to a standing position she came face to face with the ugliest man she had ever seen. She screamed and clawed trying to get away from the brute.

“Well what we gots here,” the one called Jako asked.

“She’s purty,” the other one said.

“Let me go you vile creature,” she hissed.

“O and she as sharp tongue in’er head, too. She’s mine,” ugly said.

“What bout me? I ‘elped find’er,” Jako whined. While they were distracted Alexus landed a kick to Ugly’s groin. When he loosened his grip she bolted. She didn’t get to far before she was tackled from behind.

“You’ll pay fer that,” he said as he landed a fist to her face. Stars danced around her head until everything went black.

“We better take’er topside,” Jako said.

“Not before I have a lil’ fun with’er first,” he said unzipping his pants.

“Cap’n ain’t gonna like that none. We’d better take’er up before he kills the both of us,” Jako said tugging on his friends arm.

The other man zipped his pants begrudgingly and tossed Alexus over her shoulder. Alexus came too as she was being thrown to the floor of the deck. All the fighting had stopped and all eyes were on the two captains dueling. Alexus looked up through a swollen eye. Lion was fighting, only it looked like Lion but he didn’t have his mask on. The man looked familiar but from the distance she couldn’t tell who it was.

Lion saw the two ugly pirates throw Alexus to the floor. He saw her face and the angry bruised that colored her perfect face. It threw him into a blind rage and his strength came back more fierce than ever.

“I’d have never thought ye’d ave the guts to fight me, son” Black Beard said.

“I’m not your son, you killed my parents remember,” Lion said countering his thrusts.

“Aye, I did, but I took you on and showed you everything you know. Is this how you give thanks?” Black Beard asked feigning hurt.

“Nope, this is,” Lion said, swinging the sword around and separating Black Beard’s head from his shoulders. Lion angrily walked down the steps to Alexus. He had loved the girl all his life, and now he would make the sea scum pay for marring her beautiful skin. Lion brought the sword up and ran it into Jako and his partner. He scooped Alexus up into his arms and carried her to the wheel.

“Kill’em all, raid their ship and send it to the ocean floor,” he called.

Lion carried Alexus to his cabin and kicked the door open. Contents of the room were scattered all over the floor. Drawers were dumped on the bed.

“Lexi love, are you okay?” Lion asked.

Alexus stared at him, she couldn’t believe her eyes. Only one person had called her that.

“Michael?” She gasped.

“Yes darling, tis me,” he said cuddling her close.

“It’s you. You’re not dead,” she cried. All the years of sorrow washed over her. He was alive. The love of her life was alive and holding in his arms. He had been the one she had made love to, and he was the one she lost her heart too.

“Don’t cry my love,” he said kissing her tears from her face.

“I’ve missed you so. I’m sorry for those things I said to you. Can you forgive me?”

“Always, my Lexi love, always,” he said kissing her softly.

On their journey home they spent many hours in each other’s arms making up for lost time. Lion told her of how Black Beard had killed his family but had spared him. Black Beard had taught him how to fight, and one night while they were docked in Tortuga Bay, Lion had stole a ship and hired a crew with what he had stolen form Black Beard. Through the years he had made a name for himself.

“Why didn’t you write?” Alexus asked. They were wrapped in a sheet after another love making morning.

“It was too risky,” he said. He stilled remembered the day of her birthday and how he had broke her little heart. He had never really forgiven himself for what he had done, but it just wouldn’t have been proper for him to become infatuated with a thirteen year old when he was a grown man, but he had always known he loved the little girl, now turned woman.

“What will you do now?” She asked.

“Now that Black Beard is dead I’ll probably return to my house in the Bahamas,” he said.

“And what of me?” She asked sadly.

“Well I would like you to marry me,” he said, “that is if you’ll take me and your father will let me have you. What do you say?”

“Yes, oh yes,” she said showering kisses upon his now unmasked face, forgetting about everything bad that had happened between them.

Three weeks later they arrived back in London bay. Michael had donned a suit and looked nothing like a pirate. When Alexus came above ship the crew looked nothing like the crew she had first met. They all looked like respectable crewmen. Word had spread that Michael DeVoe had been found and had rescued Alexus from the Lion. Sadly enough Lion had died in a battle at sea and was lost forever. Her father greeted her happily, embracing her in a tight hug.

“My love I am so glad you are safe,” Henry said hugging her tightly he then turned to Michael, “son I am so glad you are safe. To hear that you have been alive for all these years, is joyous to this old heart.”

“Thank you sir,” Michael said shaking the old man’s hand.

“Father, Michael has asked me to marry him. Can we have your permission?”

“Darling, you’ve no dowry,” he said sadly.

“What?” Alexus cried.

“That is why you were to marry Reynolds. I lost everything at the gaming tables,” he said casting his eyes downward.

“That isn’t a problem,” Michael said. “I’ve plenty of money to pay your debts and you can move with us to the Bahamas if you wish.”

“You mean it?” Henry said.

“Alexus is all I need,” he said pulling her into his arms.

“Then I give my blessing,” Henry said. “Welcome to the family son.” Henry took Michael into his arms and hugged him tightly. When they separated Alexus noticed tears in her fathers eyes.

“Shall we go and gather you things?” Michael asked taking her by the hand

“When are we going to sail?’ She asking staring up into his eyes. They were still as blue as she remembered.. Even though Michael had aged he still looked like she remembered him, just will longer hair.

“I’d like to be out with the evening tide. The sooner we can get married the better,” he said kissing her.

“That soon, but I was hoping to find a dress,” she said sadly.

“There are several French dress shops on my island. We can find you one there,” he said pulling her closer to him.

“That’ll work for me,” she said smiling up at him. She loved the feeling of his rock solid body against hers.

“I just want to begin our lives together as soon as possible,” he said bestowing a gentle kiss on her forehead.

“What is the meaning of this,” came a loud voice from the end of the pier. “Mr. Reynolds... I thought you were out of town,” henry stammered.

“I was. I was in search of what was lost to me. That young woman right there,” Chester said coming up to Michael.

“I beg your pardon, Mr. Reynolds, I belong to no man,” Alexus shot testily.

“That is where you are wrong. You see, your father and I have an agreement and you are what he sold to me in order to pay of his debts.”

Michael stepped between Alexus and Reynolds. He didn’t like the look Reynolds had in his eyes when he looked at Alexus.

“I am willing to pay off any debts that Mr. Winsmore has acquired,” growing impatient with the rather large man.

“I don’t want money. What I want is that little tart on your arm. Though I am sure she is damaged goods, I am old and can over look such minor details,” he said licking his lips.

Alexus shivered under the mans obvious lust for her. She could feel the bile rising to the back of her throat.

“You had best apologize to my future wife,” Michael said pushing Alexus farther behind him. He clenched his fists at his side. He could feel his blood begin to boil and Lion’s temper began to rise to the surface.

“What are you going to do to stop me?” Chester challenged.

“I am a patient man Mr. Reynolds, but you are trying them. Now, you best apologize to the lady,” Michael stated through gritted teeth.

When Chester didn’t answer Michael ushered Henry and Alexus around the man.

“Stop right there,” Chester cried. The sound of a hammer being pulled back on a gun stopped all of them in their tracks. The three slowly turned to face the fat man. Chester had the gun pointed at Michael’s chest.

“No,” Alexus cried.

“Shoot me,” Michael challenged. “But you better hope to kill me with the first shot because if you don’t I will kill you.” In one quick movement Michael closed the distance between he and Chester. Alexus watched in horror as the scene unfolded in front of her eyes. They were a mass of tangled limbs and grunts of pain as the two men fell to the ground. Despite the man’s girth he was stronger than he looked.

Michael landed a fist to the man’s face and it connected to the cartilage of Chester’s nose with a sickening crunch. Chester retaliated with a fist to Michael’s midsection. A shot rang out.

“No,” Alexus wailed. She watched as Michael sank to the dock lifelessly. She tried to run to Michael’s side but Chester stopped her.

“You are mine,” he said gripping her arm tightly.

Henry started forward.

“Uh uh... Not another step from you or I’ll kill her,” he said raising the barrel to her head.

“Let go of me you filthy pig,” she spat. Chester slapped Alexus viscously and her head snapped to the side. Pain clouded her vision and darkness threatened to swallow her.

“It is time you learn your place, and I am going to show you good and proper,” he said groping the bodice of her gown. Alexus shivered again in revulsion.

“We are going to be married now,” Chester said dragging her towards the street.

“I’d rather be shark bait,” she said wriggling free of his grasp. When she was free Alexus sprinted down the dock. Suddenly she was tackled from behind, and her head met the hard planks of the dock. The world around her began to spin rapidly. Chester’s weight was upon her pinning her face down into the dock.

“Get off of me,” she gasped. She tried to squirm free but due to his bulk the efforts were useless. Chester rolled her over and crushed his mouth to hers, bruising her lips. His slimy tongue darted into her mouth and she gagged. He tasted of stale rum and onions. Then his body went limp and rolled to the side. She rolled away and looked up. Michael was on his knees holding a smoking pistol. His other hand cradled a wound in his side. Dark red droplets oozed through his fingers and stained his white shirt red.

Alexus ran to Michael’s side just as he collapsed. She cradled his head in her lap.

“I told him he had better kill me,” he rasped. He had never cared about dying before, but now he wanted to live more than anything in the world.

Alexus laughed as tears streaked her dirt smudged face. Michael coughed and groaned in pain. His eyes fluttered shut.

“Don’t you leave me,” she cried. “Not now. I just found you.”

“Everything I have now belongs to you,” he whispered.

“Don’t say that. You’re not going any where,” she said. Tears were now blurring her vision.

“I’d do it all again if I had to. Just spending the last few days in your arms made my life complete,” he said.

“Shhhh.... Don’t talk like that,” she gently admonished.

“I... Love... You... Lexi love... I always have,” his head rolled to the side and his eyes drifted shut.

“Don’t die,” she whispered into his hair. “Please don’t die.” She sat on the dock cradling the body of her dead lover. She rocked back and forth. She had found the man of her dreams and lost him in a months time. She had loved and lost, and now she was a woman.

Six months later

“Do you Michael DeVoe, take this woman, Alexus Daniela Winsmore, to be your lawfully wedded wife; to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?”

“Even after death,” Michael said looking down at the beautiful rose before him. Michael couldn’t believe the stroke of luck he was having. He had been nearly dead and now he was marrying the woman he had always been meant to marry. He would never forget how beautiful she had looked walking down the isle in her white, hand made dress, that had a slight bulge in the front, evidence of their first love making. He had never seen an angel before today. Her hair cascaded down her back and had wild island flowers carefully woven into the strands. She wore the locked of her mother’s around her neck.

Alexus was walking on air. She had never been so heartbroken and happy in the same moment as that day on the pier. Someone had tracked down a doctor and he had performed surgery right there, saving Michael’s life. He looked dashing in his black breeches, that hugged every curve of his lower body. He wore a finely tailored shirt fit for a king, and as far as she was concerned he was a king, her king. His hair was still long, but instead of being bound it hung loosely around his shoulders, shining brightly.

“And do you Alexus Winsmore...” She tried to listed to what the priest was saying but her thoughts kept returning to the man in front of her. Then she heard “until death do you part.”

“Even after death,” she whispered.

“I love you,” he whispered.

“By the power...” Before the minister could finish his sentence Michael scooped Alexus up into his arms and placed a long hungry kiss on her lips.

“Pronounce you man and wife,” the priest finished chuckling.

They turned and the crowd cheered pelting them with rice as they made their way down the beach. The crew from Lion’s ship was in attendance. The sun had began to make it’s decent on the horizon casting every thing in brilliant golds and pinks.

Mary came to stand beside Alexus and Alexus noticed the generous swell in Mary’s abdomen and smiled warmly at her friend. Alexus rubbed Mary’s belly and Mary did the same to Alexus. They girls laughed. They were both truly happy. Captain White came to Mary’s side and put a protective arm around his wife.

“You’re gonna love married life,” Captain White said.

“I know,” Michael agreed.

Captain White stared at Michael for a moment. There was something strangely familiar about the man.

“Tell me something, Michael. Have we met before?” He asked arching a dark brow.

Michael looked at Captain White and smiled. “I don’t think so. Perhaps in another life time,” he said.

“Perhaps,” Captain White said stroking his mustache.

“If you’ll excuse me, my wife and I have some business to attend to,” he said scooping Alexus up into his arms. They left their guests on the beach drinking and having a good time and they disappeared into the mansion overlooking the sea.

“Are you happy?” Michael asked placing her on a bed covered with fragrant rose petals.

“Couldn’t be happier. I love you” she said pulling him down to her.

“And I you, my Lexi love.”

He kissed her fully. Lion was buried at the bottom of the ocean with all of his adventures. It was time for a new beginning and new adventures.
