My sestina that tells of my happy visions of the nightly sky.
A Treasure of the Night

The night heavens were luminous within the beautiful sky.
The full moon was leading the silent procession
As the other stars and planets were all taking their places
I gazed at the majestic scene and this spell was affixed in my mind.
No earthly sounds disturbed the beauty as I sat in awe
Of the universe with its harmony and treasures of the divine.

I wondered if anyone could replicate this masterpiece of the divine.
I could not think how any human could decorate the sky.
As millions of years passed, mankind has observed this view in awe.
Their minds could never fully grasp how intricate was this procession.
Who could even suggest the movements and actualities in their mind?
For here we sit and think of the galaxies in their places.

As time advances, there will be uncovered more secrets and far away places.
We might even fly in the empyreal space and pretend that we are closer to the divine.
As we desperately try to satisfy the questions in our limited mind
And try to take apart the beauty and simpleness of the sky.
The nights and days are continue indefinitely with the same procession
And new explorers experience the delight of their discovery in awe.

Some ancient astrologers viewed the stars’ alignment with mystical awe.
And the future was pronounced set as the planets went to their places.
The guiding star of Bethlehem led the Magi in their wandering procession
That would complete a prophecy of a miracle of the divine
And the holiest choir would come down from the sky
To give the shepherds a message of peace, each man would feel in his mind.

Great scientists like Galileo, Copernicus, or others used the logic in his mind.
Their great achievements were founded upon concepts we now hold in awe.
No electronic telescopes and gadgets helped them scan the sky
Their brilliant minds would discover where many celestial bodies were in their places
Each man would be shunned or ridiculed by those who persecuted them in the name of the divine
And the Inquisition would lead these men to condemnation in a pious procession.

But there is so much for me to show my children as I enjoy tonight’s procession.
I can picture the images of constellations and planets in my mind.
I believe there was that instantaneous explosive creation by the power we call divine
Whose gift to all mankind has been held in glorious awe.
And each night the same planets, moons and stars assume their traditional places
And give us the elements we look at with excitement in the sky.

Now the sun breaks the spell of the night sky and I lose sight of the beloved procession.
All celestial bodies proceed to new places that I concede in my satisfied mind
That others will contemplate in awe and thank the accomplishment of the divine.
