The Concept of Freedom

The concept had escaped me
As my thoughts were for my men
I knew we'd never leave
But fight through to the end.

Amongst the cries of sadness
There was merging of the roles
Civilians, Soldiers: each alike
Seeking freedom for these souls.

Some say they had made their choice
But was it theirs to make
It was for us to be there
And to put our lives at stake.

I understood our sacrifice
When a small child thanked my men
With freedom all around
The concept found me once again.
