Being Able
by Kristine Dukes

My mommy cried the day I died

She wanted me so bad...

I wanted to come, she really wanted a son

But I would have had to live without my dad.

His violence wasn't contained to

having an occasional crazy thought...

Unrestrained those extreme emotions

in the end are how he got caught.

My mommy named my Able

So I'd be Able to succeed

I think now she's the able one,

she survived my dads violent deed

And yet she really loved me

though born of a hateful act

When I'm given another chance

there I'll live with faith and tact

What my mommy taught me

is forgiveness always rules

Empathy and compassion grow

in heart that forgiving fuels

She's not perfect either

she'll be the first to let you know

But her heart is to always be

seeking so the truth in her will grow

My mommy doesn't cry as much now

she's giving life another chance

I hope she'll follow her heart now

and maybe finally learn to dance.
