reaching for higher ground
Higher Places
By Kristine Dukes

There are new heights that I’m

seeking, can I breathe the air up there?

It’s higher then I’ve gone before,

I wonder, should I dare?

Can I do it? Will I fall?

I might look foolish on the way.

Putting away these questions and

fears, I've decided to go all the way.

The way looks steep and rocky I’ll

have to leave some “stuff” behind.

To see life at the mountain top

is the only thing on my mind.

Letting go of hurts and wounds

I will forgive each and every one.

Giving up self motivation, narrow thinking

and some habits I thought were fun.

Forget years of education, every

supposed turth I've heard or read.

Erase intellect, my desires and

every careless word I’ve said.

Awards, degrees, certificates,

everything that makes me proud,

Designer lables and accessories that were

supposed to make me part of the "crowd"

I want to basque in that warm light that

shines brighter then diamonds or gold.

I surrender everything that I am

all the sad stories I’ve ever told.

I'll go to those higher places where

I can see people through brighter eyes

Be a reflection of those enlightened souls who

who pour love and caring into others lives.

I've been loved when I was most unlovely

compassion rescued me again and again.

If I had to list all the ways it's been done

I wouldn’t know where to begin.

I’ll keep seeking the light of truth

forever as I dwell on the good people do.

I vow to keep paying it forward so

hopefully others will too.
