Saturday Morning

“Jan!” Harry called down the cellar stairs, “I was just talking to my brother on the phone and sort of on the spur of the moment, I invited him and Sharon and the kids for dinner tonight. You know, we haven’t seen them in a while. I know it’s not much notice but you can whip up one of those wonderful dinners quick, right? It’ll be fun.”

Jan listened from the cellar where she was sorting the laundry. Saturday morning was the only time she had for laundry with a full-time job, two kids, and all their after-school sports and activities. Fortunately, she worked in town so the commute made it easy to juggle everything. Saturdays were always catch-up the house days so Sunday could be for family time.

As she came up the stairs Harry started talking again. “They’re coming about six, Allie’s soccer game should be over by two so you’ll get home in plenty of time to make the dinner. You probably need groceries huh, I can run out for you this morning, while you’re at Alex’s little league practice, if you make a list. I don’t need to be at the golf course till ten. The house looks good, just needs a quick vacuuming and some straightening. I’ll be home by four easy. I know you always like to have the lawn mowed. You really won’t have time to do that and get Allie to her game too, I think it will be ok to just leave it till tomorrow, what do you think?

Jan looked at her husband long and hard and then said, “Wrong question.”
