Their Own Little Secret

Sitting in the yard with her granddaughter, age five Lena was trying to think of something to keep them busy. Ginny was with her unexpectedly for the day, so they were thinking up plans together as they sat in the sunshine of the spring morning. They had already decided on lunch out, after a trip to the library, which unfortunately didn’t open until ten in the summertime, and then off to the park. Though quite proud of their plans, unfortunately it was only eight thirty, and the library was only ten minutes away.

Suddenly Lena looked up, “I think there’s a lemon in that tree!”

“Where!” Ginny perked up, looking.”

“Oh goodness! It’s moving!” Lena said.

“Grammie! I think it’s a bird! I think it’s a yellow bird!”

“No, birds are always gray, or brown or sometimes robins that have red tummies, not yellow!”

“I think it is a bird!”

“I have a book, I’ll go get it!”

In the book, they found many yellow birds, and in their section of the world, Goldfinch.

“It must be a goldfinch; do you think it will sing for us?” Ginny asked.

“I think it probably thinks we are scary giants. We’re probably lucky it hasn’t flown away already. Let’s go to the store and get some seed that goldfinch like and maybe it will stay around.” Off they went.

The rest of the day went as planned, and in the afternoon, they went out to check for the goldfinch. It was gone, but next to the seeds they had spread out, was one golden feather.

They attracted many goldfinch after that day, and many other birds too. Though the two of them always called the goldfinch “Lemon Birds” and nobody else ever found out why. They kept it their own little secret.
