Last Night

I absentmindedly picked up my glass, forgetting I’d filled it up, and instead of taking the last sip, I poured it down my chin, my shirt, my computer, my papers, my desk, lap, the rug, the cat, and the floor. I don’t know who screeched the loudest, me or the cat.

The laptop made little crying sounds as I whipped it upside down, knocking my chair across the room as I jumped up. I had no idea what to do beyond unplugging everything and hauling it to the shop tomorrow. I should know what to do. I’ve been to the shop so many times people probably think I work there. I just keep forgetting.

I pulled out my old computer and started over. Suddenly I wondered why I got a new computer anyway. The old one seemed so the same as the new one. I’d had the new one for a couple years now, there certainly had to be updatey reasons I felt I had to upgrade, yet here I was doing the exact thing I was going to do on the new one, on the old one, and it was working fine. Huh...

A song came on the radio just then that was really popular but just didn’t do it for me. I couldn’t figure out why everyone liked it, I reached up and switched stations, catching an old favorite of mine, and immediately starting to sing along as I typed my paper. I stayed on that station, working on that computer all evening. It made me feel good, calm, in control somehow.

The next day the magic was gone. I was me again, back in today, even happy to be here. But now I remembered my yesterdays differently, and now, they color my todays a little bit sweeter.
