A slightly cynical look at the festive celebrations |
It's 10 short months since the world declared, a happier new year Yet, we're still waiting for that joy, and better world to appear And now, so soon the shadow looms, of the festive time again That noisy, costly, indulgent day, when everyone pretends Pretends it's Jesus birthday, on December 25th Even though that date is just, a randomnly chosen myth Pretend that buying presents, for those we're closest to Makes us lovely people, though scoundrels do that too Pretend the world will soon have peace, and good people will win And tell the kids a strange old bloke, is going to break in And pretend the gifts our friends have given, have caused us to rejoice Even though, under obligation, they never really had a choice Pretend Jesus is a helpless baby, though he died at 33 And now reigns up in heaven, as a king who will set us free And though the reason for celebration, ignores the Bible and God's name They still insist on using it, to have a lavish holiday And while the minority of mankind, are revelling in it all With spending sprees and drunken knees, and traditional family brawls They are oblvious to the silent world, of those desperate and alone The poor, the sick, the broken-hearted, and those who have no home And when the gifts are all unwrapped, and the batteries have run down And we've stuffed ourselves to toxic levels, and the booze is guzzled down As were reaching for the liver salts, and counting credit bills And just to escape the boredom, we flog gifts for ebay thrills Then there comes the magic mantra, of the happy new year pact Where Fitness clubs become the place, to dismantle all the fat And it takes us all of a month to see, that our lives are still the same And that pinning hopes on a calendar date, is silly and deranged And while we search for peace and happiness, as helpless, lonely fools Resolutions and wishes won't save our world, we need a flippin miracle And so my greeting in this little muse, is a sincere wish for us all The holidays won't save our world, so may God help us all |
