A worn pencil ponders its existence, from humble beginnings to empowering the written word
My world shrinks, and the familiar blurs. I am no longer a giant hand, but a speck, a grain of graphite trapped within the heart of a cedar prison. Its yellow exterior, though worn and faded in places, bears witness to the countless thoughts and ideas I have helped manifest. I am darkness compressed, potential for creation held captive. My brethren, countless and identical lie beside me - a silent waiting army.

Around me, the wood whispers secrets of another life lived; the slow steady growth of a young tree, and the sun-dappled warmth of the forest floor. I feel the sting of the axe…the whirring blades that carved me…the faint scent of pine lingers. A ghost of the forest I once knew. But my true purpose lies beyond these memories, I yearn for the gentle touch of the hand, the scrape against paper, ready and eager to be honed to a fine point to unleash the potential within. I dream of leaving my mark, of etching stories and drawings onto the page, of living out the fantasies of my owner onto the blank canvas of the world. Each stroke I imagine is a tiny rebellion, a carving of my essence into the light.

I am lifted, propelled towards the surface. I am poised, a solder about to enter the fray. The tip touches paper, and anticipation gives way to action as I leave a trail of grey dust and a whisper of my being transferred onto the page. Letters form, wobbly and uncertain at first - it’s a child’s hand, clumsy yet eager. The child laughs a sound of pure joy at the mark they’ve made, as the letters grow stronger and clearer on the page.

With a stroke of graphite, I can bring worlds to life, capture emotions, and immortalise thoughts. I am not just a piece of graphite, but a tool, a bridge between thought and expression. I am the instrument that gives voice to the stories within us, the spark that ignites the imagination. I am a humble pencil, and my purpose is to empower creation.
