Summary of this Book...
Before the Spanish Conquistadors conquered what is now known as Mexico, that region was home to the magnificent ancient civilization ruled by the mysterious Aztecs. This book is the (fictional) first person account of one man who lived through this civilization's height of power, and was present and active through its ruination at the hands of Hernan Cortez.
I especially liked...
The vivid imagery and elaborate description lure the reader into an exotic world of ancient splendor. The characters, particularly that of the protagonist, Mixli, flair to life with such power, one can easily forget the book is fictional.
I didn't like...
While I could not claim to dislike one aspect of this novel, it is only fair to warn readers of the explicit content of sexual and violent nature.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Upon finishing this book I could hardly breathe. It was a rollar-coaster ride through an amazing history. It left me trembling and thoughtful.
This Book made me feel...
Rare is it that one can read a book that can affect a reader on so many levels. Throughout this book I laughed aloud, I cried, I clenched my fists in anger and disgust. I fell subject to its unique brand of occasional erotica. I lived every moment of Mixtli's intensely beautiful and tragic life.
The author of this Book...
Gary Jennings created a masterpiece when he wrote this book. It is his habit to spend considerable time, years even, studying in the locales of his books, and even doing everything in his power to live like his characters. He did no less with Aztec. This knowledge, combined with an incredible literary talent, has given him the opportunity to gift the world with this epic tale.
I recommend this Book because...
On every level, whether one's taste in literature leans toward, action, adventure, romance, love, tragedy, history, war, culture, comedy and/or drama, this book has something to offer everyone.
Further Comments...
This is one of the most imaginative, fascinating, moving and exciting novels I have ever had the privilage to read. At the command of Spain's King Carlos, Mixtli relates the story of his life, his adventures, and eventually, the fall of what the Mexica (Aztecs) called the One World. This is not a story to miss!
