Summary of this Book...
One of several books in the "Hawkscliffe Harlot" series. Lucien- an indentical twin to Damien- is a spy for England. His heart has been hardened by all the atrocities he has witnessed and endured on the Continent during the war with Napolean. Enter Alice Montague- an innocent and idealistic maid who enters Lucien's den of sin to retrieve her sister-in-law. Lucien's heart is softened by Alice's ability to heal. He now must kill an enemy spy to save his new found love, his sanity and all of London.
I especially liked...
The sub-plot and romance were expertly intertwined in this story. The threat to Lucien and Alice was real and imminent. Major characters even died- this was well done.
I didn't like...
The book is a bit long. There are descriptive paragraphs that I skim over- bored by too much scenery.
The author of this Book...
Gaelen Foley's earlier works- the Ascension series- was not nearly as well done. She has improved- relying on strong story lines and intriguing characters- the gratuitous sex is not nearly as pervasive in the Hawkscliffe stories.
Further Comments...
Gaelen Foley's historical knowledge is well used- pulling out story lines from the Napoleanic wars that are usually ignored in the Regency genre. It gives you something new to think about. A nice change of pace.
