Summary of this Book...
This is an english translation of a Portugese novel. I'll never know if anything was lost in translation. I'm okay with this as I enjoyed the story as is.

The Double puts a whole new meaning to the expression "in search of myself". It's a wonderful journey of one man in search of a twin he believes exists; he saw him on videos - looks just like him but with a moustache.

Don't be fooled. A resemblance in physical attributes does not mean there are shared personality traits.

This type of Book is good for...
any reader who enjoys character based writing. While the plot is in the background, the characters, complete with quirkiness, shine in the forefront.
I especially liked...
the descriptions of haggard emotion. As a reader, I felt for Tertuliano Maximo Afonso as he began his quest. There was no typical sense of excitment but a darker feeling of fear. How do you hunt down yourself?
This Book made me feel...
the world was very small. In a city of 5 million, could there be many "clones"?
The author of this Book...
Jose Saramago, is one of Portugal's national treasures. He is a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. He is a master at creating characters whom you have to adore, even when it is not warranted.
I recommend this Book because...
the idea behind the story is something I believe everyone has thought about at some time or another. What if there's another "me" out there? Could we switch lives?
I don't recommend this Book because...
if you are someone who expects a form to the writing. Saramago (or the translator) will disappoint. Commas replace quotation marks around conversations. One paragraph might be one sentence thirty words long.

If you are a punctuation freak, stay away.
Further Comments...
I have renamed the main character of this book "Fonzie". Don't laugh. Even quietly to myself, I got tired reading Tertuliano Maximo Afonso over and over again.

I think this was the intent of the author. He wants the reader to get past the silly name and connect with the man; make him our own.

This novel is full of wonderful characters, each have a charm of their own. The reader feels the wonderment and fear of Fonzie, his shock when meeting his "Double". The twists and turns and deceit which follow are not predictable. It leaves one wondering, are there more?
