The story is set in 19th century China, where Lily and her laotong, or old same, Snow Flower, are matched for life. The author invites us into the lives of these girls and their families. We witness their growth, both physically and emotionally, throughout the years, in a culture that places little value on the lives of women. It's a touching story of love, loss and endurance.

Anyone who likes to be taken fully into another culture and experience, through the written word, something they would never otherwise be able to witness.

The richness of the characters and the author's ability to draw the reader into the story emotionally.
