Summary of this Book...
Dean Koontz gives us a character named Odd, who matches his namesake. Odd can see ghosts- including Elvis, who lives with him- and his adventures involve saving lives and avenging spirits while hungering for a simpler life. The character’s sad past is brought up, but Odd does not lament over it, he just sees it as a reality and it is part of the reason why he cares about other people so much. If you’re not hooked by the end of book one, then maybe mystery/supernatural/drama/romance is not your thing, but if you are hooked, the Odd series is ongoing with already a few others out to keep you happy.
This type of Book is good for...
High school students, college students, and adults who like supernatural books. I put 18+ because I would not recomend it for anyone below the age of sixteen or seventeen. Simply because somr of the elements in the story can be a little rough on younger readers. (An abusing and crazy mom, people being cut up and stored in a freezer...)
I especially liked...
The character appeals to me as he constantly desires to help people and stay true to the girl he loves. The descriptions and voive in the book are enjoyable, and the action elements are intense. I enjoyed the psychological elements and symbolism and the fact that the villains did not need any superpower to be scary.
I didn't like...
Odd thomas' constant "I can, but you can't... at least not as well" attitude about his powers seemed to conflict with the character himself. And coyotes are animals I have lived around my entire life without ever hearing about or seeing one attack a person so when the reader is supposed to fear the coyotes I couldn't really feal that fear.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Read the next one.
This Book made me feel...
A sense of passion for the people who I've lost ad the people I still have and... well, generaly for all people, everywhere. Also, a deep hatred for criminals and murderers.
The author of this Book...
I like a lot of Dean Koontz' novels and that the author stays true to the book. Even when he is offered a movie deal, he rejects it if it compromises the book.
I recommend this Book because...
It is a good read and it puts things into perspective quite nicely.
I don't recommend this Book because...
I know a few people who did not really enjoy this book because they could not connect with the main character, but that is really the idea. Odd is supposed to be odd.
Further Comments...
I love the wryting style. Some of the paragraphs were veary beautifuly worded, like a poem.
