Summary of this DVD...
Deborah Gray’s Wish on a Spell from the Witch Crafter DVD Series. Monterey Video: Thousand Oaks, CA. 2005. www.montereymedia.com

Oh boy.

Where to begin?

Well let’s start with the cover. In the upper left corner of the DVD cover it says, “This Bewitching DVD will leave you Charmed and Spellbound!” Sounds promising, although with the italicized words also capitalized sounds more like they are using the names of TV shows to attract customers...which was basically confirmed when I read the PR sheet. It states:

Audiences have shown a unique curiosity with the
world of “Wicca” as evidenced by Harry Potter,
Charmed and Bewitched.

But of course we all know none of those shows or movies really have much to do with Wicca. Charmed semi-claims they do, but yet they do not represent what Wicca truly is.

Anyway, backt o the cover. It says on the bottom right hand corner that it also includes a “Limited Edition Collectible Bewitched Spell Booklet”. There wasn’t one included in this DVD so we can just skip right over that.

Finally we come to the actual DVD, which is 64 minutes long/ I had assumed that was without the additional features. Silly me. The “Wish on a Spell” segment is less than a half an hour. The extra features aren’t much to smile about either. At the end of one of them were told they are off to watch a ritual being performed and then the segment ends! I was really excited to watch this ritual, which of course I didn’t get to.

Then of course there is the actual “Wish on a Spell” segment, and yes if you are fans of Charmed or Harry Potter – you might actually enjoy it. I like them both, but I also know they are not real, nor are they supposed to be. “Wish on a Spell” is just plain laughable. I thought this was supposed to be serious.

Sure Deborah Gray does give a few spells to perform but she also plws right over concepts such as free will, religious practices, and karma (or the 3 fold law if you are Wiccan). As my friend and I watch it, we did do a lot of laughing, but honestly I don’t think they meant for it to be funny.

This movie is not only the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes of witchcraft instruction films - it’s way over priced at $19.95 for the whole 64 minutes.
