I understand there are many different forms of Wicca in this world and the authors of this book are only representing one form of Wicca – that which is taught and practiced at the Church and School of Wicca, but I was very surprised with this book.
Several of the concepts, I had never heard of before, so I asked around. I couldn’t find anyone I knew who had ever heard of some of the ideas expressed by the authors.
I was also thrown off by the order in which topics were covered in this book. Information regarding performing a required sacred marriage rite is given within the first 30 pages but how to perform a spell doesn’t come for another 100 pages.
I can only assume the Frosts know what they are talking about in regards to their own tradition, since so much of this I have never encountered in my 18 years of practice – even their meaning of the pentagram is totally different than any I have ever heard before.
I have very mixed feelings about this book. Everyone of course is entitled to their own opinions of how things work, yet several times the authors point out why they are right and other groups are wrong. They do this AFTER saying how diverse Wicca is, and how a person can create their own form of Wicca, “...provided only that it is positive, harming none.”
They also say, “...a genuine Wiccan does not ever criticize another’s belief system, provided the system is positive.” Yet it seems throughout this book they point out why their form of Wicca is the “true” one.
I do NOT recommend this book for a beginner. Anyone reading this book should already have a good understanding of Paganism in general, and perhaps do some research on the Church and School of Wicca to see if their beliefs mesh with those of this tradition. General knowledge on the different forms of Wicca would also be recommended.
