Summary of this Book...
The story begins with: "I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day in January of 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of 1974." This mesmerizing book will pull you through to the very end, a tale of a Greek-American family and the "roller-coaster ride of a single gene through time." It's told through the eyes of Cal Stephanides, and how this 41-year-old hermaphrodite was raised as Calliope, who kept waiting for her body to develop. This book will take you to many levels, not only Cal's story, but historical, scientific, psychological, and political aspects as well.
This type of Book is good for...
Adults
I especially liked...
The narrator of this audio book was probably the best I've ever listened to. It's also the winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Audie Award for best unabridged fiction.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
I couldn't stop thinking about this book. There is so much to digest, to consider, to ponder. Wow.
This Book made me feel...
This story opened my mind up to things I never considered. It's like a light bulb turned on in a dusty part of my brain.
The author of this Book...
Jeffrey Eugenides was born in Detroit. Middlesex took him nine years to write. He's also written The Virgin Suicides and The Marriage Plot.
I recommend this Book because...
The way the author describes anything, is so amazing. His word choices, his phrases, and descriptions of everything in this book is beautifully written.
Further Comments...
I had no idea what this book was about when I first started listening to it. It was recommended to me by a family member. I have since recommended it to others.
