As a huge fan of the Writing Excuses podcast, I really wanted to branch out and read more of the other hosts' work besides Brandon Sanderson. I previously read PARTIALS by Dan Wells and really liked it, so I figured I'd give his more widely-acclaimed series a try. Honestly, I preferred PARTIALS. This book was technically well written and nicely paced, but I just didn't ever reach a point where I cared about or felt invested in the protagonist. He spends so much time self-analyzing himself, just when the narrative starts to get interesting, he'll derail it with some internal struggle over whether he's following his rules for not becoming a serial killer. Overall, this book just didn't do anything for me.
