The series is a rollercoaster of sheer madness, dangling on the brink of the ludicrous. Much of it is straight-up slapstick, with the rest involving the lead character in all sorts of strange and twisted scenarios. Yet, it's delightfully nonsensical, filled with characters so charming they leave a lasting impression. Remarkably, amidst the uproarious laughter it incites, the series is profoundly character-driven. Every character, including Splurt—who for all intents and purposes is a conscious glob of green Jell-O—is irresistibly appealing. Make of that what you will, but believe me, Splurt shines brightly in a cast filled with exceptional characters. Indeed, the plot occasionally relies on a bit of Deus Ex Machina to extricate our heroes from their jams, but it doesn’t detract from the enjoyment. I will admit that it seems the books lacked the polished editing of the earlier ones, but it doesn’t render them any less enjoyable or entertaining.

These books made me laugh in a way that only Deadpool has before. The humor, steeped in the ridiculous, is so effectively portrayed by the characters that it feels utterly real. Even when it edges toward the juvenile, I assert that this series boasts some of the most intelligent, witty comedy I’ve come across in a comedy series in ages. It’s thoroughly a must-read. Jump in and have fun.

The twelfth installment, in particular, hit the comedic sweet spot for me. I’d heartily recommend it to anyone drawn to this kind of humor. I’ve also purchased the comic adaptation via Kickstarter and I’m so disappointed there haven’t been any further installments of the series. He’s focused more on Dan Deadman and another, more popular, set of books, and I guess I’ll just have to reread these existing ones every year until I’m dead.
