When you put something on your notebook, it appears on the NEWSFEED, so you can reach out to the community that way.

When someone else (like me, just now) writes in your notebook, you get an email and it's visible to others, too.

A little advanced:
When you 'favourite' someone, their notebook scribbles appear as your personal newsfeed.
If someone 'favourites' you, your scribbles appear on their personal newsfeed.
Everyone's scribbles appear on the community newsfeed.

And don't worry if you don't understand all this, it'll fall in to place by the by.
