You assume I know the word....iconoclast...and I was suprised to find I didnt. If I am an icon it must be of amazement that at nearly 70 I have still not found the time to explore every thing that interests me.
Iconoclast.. One who attacks cherished beliefs. OH! Well yes I have tangled with a few of my own and a few others that did not ring true the first time I heard them. Some time I won my own affirmation even if others still disagreed and sometimes I was converted and did penance for my egotistic ferver. It hasn't cured me though. At 70 I still can get up quite a head of steam over my own idealistic views.
I enjoyed this poem. Some lines ring so true. You wrote a poem about me and my husband. We met in 1957 and we have been married since 1962 and I could not have put it better.
I am sure many others will find their relationship summed up in this same poem. Thank you.
Again I hope you are young and have lots of time to grow. This poem does explore your inner thoughts but it grasps for a straw of strength that isnt found. You are right on the edge of it at the end of the poem but your vow not to be your own soul has no ring of truth. If you are not your soul then who will you become? Strength comes from taking risks in our work and delving into what goes on past that rejection of the vision in the mirror.
a good poem if you are quite young like about 13 or 14. But to bring it into the realm of mature poetry it needs to be refocused. Choose the injured trust and the inner battle rather than pointing your pen at the "crutch." Your pen can not examine someone else with the same power it carries when we explore our own emotions. Tell us what you learned about using crutches. Tell us how you came to lean on someone so heavily without knowing they would go. Tell us how you will build your own inner fortress so this will never befall you so easily again.
often I feel the weight of my baubles and memories, stretching out the fabric, making me all lumpy and sagging and bumping against my knees so that I can not skip any more. (I save one pocket for the delicate things, Wrapped in klennix.)
Actually it came as a surprise to me the day I found out I could not skip. And I dont even know when it was that I lost it. I just forgot to keep doing it.

Now I hope this one IS a snapshot of your life. Again you have captured the emotion so well. No past or future interfers with the now save for the accumulated pile of leaves. You are a better poet than I and I would not dare to suggest one word different than what you have used. Please keep posting.
I hope the poem is a tribute to your empathy and skill and not a true snapshot of your life. It is a moving work. I have met this sad hurting man a time or two and you discribed him painfully well. You wrote clearly of taking time to sit there in the snow and give so much more than your hand or your gloves. Word picture like that will draw us to you and earn our loyalty. They make us friends in the same way I am friends with Thomas Mann or Hemmingway. Thankyou for the poem and Keep up the good work.
Ah the unexamined life that isnt worthy... LOL I expect you wanted an argument but you wont get one from me. DO IT! Find out if there is a poet out here who can blow your doors off! Parent to child exchanges are one the slipperiest forms of communication in life. Even when we do hit the mark at the time, we are subject to review as the child matures, and as exact memory of what we said fades behind the new veil of each day's fabric.
Then comes that day when we think the mental umbilical cord has finally been completely severed an we are seemingly superfluous creatures outside the realm of influence in our children's lives. Don't believe it! We are still capable of messing it up and therefore we still are capable of contributing to our children's success.
I never got it. What was the evil? How effectively did the evil register if your subject only wore a band for 8 months? I am not trying to upset you but simply to let you know this reader did not find out what you were loyal to.
