This story has a real sense of menace!

You write with a 'visual' style, and you understand what makes a story exciting.

If you get the chance, try and borrow a copy of Stephen King's book 'On Writing', as this may help you develop your idea into a fuller piece of writing.

(I can see this scene taking place about 3/4 of the way through a book - i.e. when you're still reading the novel at about 4am, on a weekday).

This is an absolutely stunning premise for a novel. Just as science doesn't help us in the dark, nor does it offer any consolation for tragedy and heartbreak.
Grab yourself an old geology textbook, and work your way through the different eras - before the two characters knew each other, their meeting, getting to know each other, etc...
I can see a writer such as Anne Tyler taking this and running with it. But, I hope the idea appeals enough to you to work it up to a full novel, before she gets a similar idea.
I'll certainly remember the day I first read this piece. Thanks.
