It's a rather moving picture of acute suffering you present through your short story here. It sure appears to have sprouted from a torn heart. The "darkness within" has been brought out quite vividly during the descriptions of your male character's confused state of mind and his feelings at war; and through the female character's feeling of utter loss once her beloved will have left her alone. The sense of searing pain can be felt at first reading itself. Bravo!
When I was reading I kept looking for something to have to do with heartbeat in order to match the title, "Pulse". However- probably it's a technique you used though -you chose to write about 'warmth' instead. In a way it does apply to 'pulse' as well i must say. I personally took it to be life stopping with this fatal break-up and the warmth rekindling only to leave soon with the sinking pulse. So finally, it was quite interesting to read a cliche scene recounted in a refreshing style altogether.
