JUST ASK

When the children were very small
I tried to teach right from wrong.
Sometimes they'd listen, I felt sure
they'd grow up good, and strong.

We had our trials and tribulations
but most things worked out okay;
there was love enough to go around,
and I knew they'd be gone someday.

I always left an open door in case
they wanted to come back home
and if they needed anything at all,
they could call me on the phone.

"Just ask" I told them as they left
to make lives of their own choice,
and there were times I'd wonder if
I'd ever hear again their voice.

Troubles come and troubles go
and it seems each one in turn
came back to me for just awhile
to refresh, regroup and learn.

Now when I'm feeling lonely
and my heart is in despair,
when I am feeling no one cares
I know that they are there.

"Just ask" they tell me now,
"if you need anything at all -
remember that we are here for you,
all you have to do is call."
