Parents never stop to think how much domestic violence affects their kids!
Ear pressed hard against the wall
Heart beating like the Ashanti drums
Drowning in hot blood rushing through veins
She listens

Breath held to quieten bodily sounds
Nothing escaping pricked ears
Behind closed doors danger looms
Taunting her lost soul

The proverbial struggles begin
Muffled sounds gain tempo
Screams pierce the dark night
Furniture screech, glasses break to wake the dead

She tries to move still she stays
Knees wobbling like jelly
Palms sweaty, suffocating
Painfully pressing harder against the cold wall

Fear and hurt long replaced by despair
Disillusionment followed by betrayal
Wallowing in self-pity
Vexed at her own helplessness

She tries to cry no tears succumb
Same script different night
Slowly numbed she recoils back to her shell
Immune to the wounds she'll attend

Death dances precariously within reach
Hope ever so evasive
Pain embraced like a comrade
Happiness a myth to the soul

She scrambles away to bed
Eyes closed brain racked
New ways to please formulated
Daring to hope tomorrow he wont fight

She stays for her
Love and hate created through blame
One sweet day her cocoon shed
The docile child will fly away from pain

Fly away like a butterfly...
