From the lady's perspective

Dressed In Gray

Silence fills my lonely night
as winter winds blows cold.
I cry myself to sleep in spite
of this tale to be told.

Embraced in a lover's charms;
my stranger dressed in gray
in a warrior's loving arms,
long nights rule darkest day.

In splendid passion we rise
higher than the birds can fly.
Love was shining in his eyes,
he had to say goodbye.

The Civil War was raging,
cannon fire coming in.
Lives were forever changing,
does anyone ever win?

Why did he march off to war
and leave me in the night?
Walking wounded to the core
alone in the candle light.

Battle rages in the field,
shots fired, round for round.
Fortunes of war revealed,
lives lost on deadly ground.

My lover dressed in gray, falls
and the light is fading fast
as his final judgement calls,
please send him home at last;

He will rest right next to God,
my man of love and charm.
May he lay beneath the sod
at peace and out of harm.
